For me its the Les Paul for sure. All I ever though about when I started playing guitar was owning a LP. I had friends with strats and I never even gave it a second thought. I loved hendrix but a LP had the sound that did it for me. I started playin in the 60,s and didnt own a strat until 2006. I did own a tele in the 70,s.

I think most non-guitarist/non-musician people (especially females) will be drawn to the "prettiest" guitar in a herd...that usually means my Fiesta Red Stratocaster, or the old Green Sparkle Danelectro DC3 Pro (back when I had it, it's long gone now)...

As far as "most iconic" electric guitar, I think most people will think the Stratocaster first and the Les Paul second. If a non-musician were asked to identify an electric guitar, most would pick the shape of a Strat.

...and although I personally prefer a Telecaster, I have to agree the most iconic electric guitar is the Stratocaster.

Could be the Stratocaster but the Telecaster came out first, then the Les Paul. Hey I don't want to be stuck in 1954!

The difference in iconic stature between the Les Paul and the Strat is definitely a photo finish, with the final winner being settled more by one's particular opinion more than anything else.

My opinion has the Les Paul as being the most iconic. I know that some may argue Hendrix, Clapton, and Beck ... and with very good reasons. But, when anyone says "guitar god", generally what comes to mind is Jimmy Page with his ridiculously low-slung Les Paul. What Page has done to cement this allure goes beyond the others combined ... in my opinion.

Agree but it is not just the Les Paul but JP with the Les Paul that is most iconic....but I guess the same could be said of a good pic of Hendix or SRV with a strat or BB King with a Gibson ES.

This went down the Rock & Roll road yet the original question was not which is the most iconic ROCK guitar.

I think when a person envisions an electric Spanish guitar their personal musical influences and tastes come into play.

Country fans might go Telecaster. For Jazz fans it would be the classic Gibson L-5 or another archtop cutaway. Grunge fans the Fender Mustang. Southern Rock fans are going to lean toward a Les Paul. R&B maybe leaning toward a Gibson Explorer or Fender Jaguar.

I'd have to agree the Stratocaster is probably the most copied. And speaking for myself I'm not thinking of any of the above. For me the most iconic is a first generation Precision Bass. It's electric and it is a guitar.

Well the title says "popular" electric guitar. So is rock music more "popular" then other genres? Maybe not these days where "popular" music is fabricated with electronics or hip-hop rap where there is not a guitar seen for miles... but then again depending on where you live it seems country or country/crossover is overtaking rock and roll. So all we need now is for a country band to make a specific guitar an icon. Until then I think if asking the average person what is the most iconic guitar.....especially on a Fender forum, the answer you will get from the majority is a no brainer.

For giggles....I googled "most popular electric guitar" and what came up on images is..you guessed it...mainly Strats and SG's and Les Pauls and Teles.

If, as you assert it's a 'guitar', then why does the headstock unambiguously read "PRECISION BASS"?

Yeah, but it is not so much the pic ... When you think of Page, you think Les Paul or the Gibson red doubleneck (... even though he definitely played other makes) And when you think Hendrix, you definitely think Strat (... even though he also played other guitars including Gibson Flying V's). And for Clapton and Beck, you think Strat even though BOTH of them have Gibson Les Paul signature models.

Your comment on BB King was an EXCELLENT one. The ES-335 is an EXTREMELY iconic guitar when you consider blues, rock, and ... oh my goodness ... jazz. Between the Strat and Les Paul, I think the LP is more iconic. But ... you are right ... in the context of "overall", I could definitely go ES-335.

What is more iconic than this?

BB's trademark guitar is an ES-355.

Well I am going to go with this.... at least to the funk fans this might be considered quite "iconic"..

Or maybe this (how can we forget the "Diddely")?

Oh yeah....but it is more then just the guitar that is iconic there....let us not minimize Chuck Berry doing the duck walk. I don't think 1 out of 10 guitar players these days would even know the model of his guitar...but most would know who Chuck Berry is and the duck walk move.

The Little Lucille is a modified Blueshawk with a pair of Blues 90s soapbars, a more conventional Gibson-style tune-o-matic bridge and stop tailpiece. No longer into production since 2006.
