BB's trademark guitar is an ES-355.

Thanks to Jimi, the Stratocaster is the most iconic.

The Les Paul comes in second.

I'd say that the Strat would be the guitar that has attained the status of being the most iconic guitar.Although the Broadcaster/Tele/Nocaster/Esquire and Les Paul came before it, it was when the first true rock star with a solid body guitar-Buddy Holly- gained worldwide fame and adulation, that the Strat started its rise to becoming a musical icon. Ever since Buddy Holly, guitarists such as Hank Marvin,Dick Dale,Don Wilson and Nokie Edwards (The Ventures),John Lennon and George Harrison and the list goes on, helped raise the Strat's status and fame.

It was when Jimi Hendrix made his literally incendiary debut at the Monterey Pop Festival that the Strat was put at the top of the pedestal as the most recognized and desired guitar in the world. It has been said that Jimi Hendrix sold more Stratocasters than the combined total of Fender's ads and the efforts of its whole PR team, because when Jimi's incredible virtuosity and his ability to coax never before heard or even dreamed of sounds from the guitar,an astronomical number of guitar players just had to have a Strat and so many Strats started to be seen on album covers,on TV appearances, album covers, concerts etc.,even those who could hardly tell a guitar from a banjo, could identify a Stratocaster.Ever since then the Strat has held its place as the most wanted guitar, not only because just about every rock guitarist in the world has been photographed playing one at one time or another, but because no other guitar can create that wonderfully bell like, crystal clear, clean tone or wail with such a wild banshee scream that can cut through any mix and take center stage.

Much to Gibson's chagrin,no matter how aggressively they market the Les Paul and promote special offers to entice guitarists to buy them, they can't dethrone the Strat as being the King of the Hill.

One of the main reasons Eric Clapton adopted the Strat as his primary blues/rock guitar is due to Buddy Guy's influence.

Image

Clapton became a Stratocaster aficionado after saw Steve Winwood with a white Strat: “I had a lot of influences when I took up the Strat. First there was Buddy Holly, and Buddy Guy. Hank Marvin was the first well known person over here in England who was using one, but that wasn’t really my kind of music. Steve Winwood had so much credibility, and when he started playing one, I thought, oh, if he can do it, I can do it.”

The two most copied designs must be the Stratocaster and the Les Paul. Speaks volumes to me.

Actually I think those roles are reversed. As much as I would love to say the Strat is the most iconic (it certainly is in my view because I'm a Strat guy) I think for the general public the Les Paul is the real Rock 'n Roll icon. Non guitarists all know what a Les Paul is and what it looks like.

I don't know. Most non-musician people I know wouldn't know a Strat or an LP by name. They just associate them with rock music. They may know the names, but they likely couldn't pick one out of a line up of guitars. Same thing goes for a Tele with country, or a Gretsch or Gibson Hollowbody with Rock-a-Billy, Rock n' Roll or Blues, ect. Sure a few of them know the names, but that's only because they may have known someone else who was really into guitars.

Asking non-guitarists which they think is the most iconic electric guitar is like asking most of us which is the most iconic model of trumpet. The answer will be of doubtful usefulness.

Though of course the correct answer is Stratocaster. Natch.

Cheers - C

PS: for certain there will be someone amongst us who actually does know what the most iconic brand of trumpet is...

Hey, C., I'm asking the opinions of the guitarists here on the forum, the comments from the non-musicians were volunteered by them, I'm just passing 'em along :D .

If that's true, then for sure it won't be the one Wynton Marsalis plays, it looks like a relic'd guitar (but that custom mouthpiece looks like it could cost a thousand bucks).

I had a Selmer trumpet when I was a kid--does that count?

There are no wrong answers here (it's an opinion thread).

But actually, such rankings all run into trouble whenever you use adjectives like 'Best', 'Most', 'Greatest', etc.

Everyone brings their own experiences and prejudices in answering.

Truth is, all the guitars mentioned are Iconic in their own way. Each has been played by Star-status musicians and each has contributed greatly to one or more genre.

There are also others which were not mentioned but also deserve to be in the mix, such as the Rickenbacker 360, Melody Maker, L-5, Firebird, Flying V and others.

I'm just happy to say that I own several of them and love each for what it is.

cheers!

With me it seem that most ask to play one of the Lp.s first then comes the single atomic pickup FSR Stratocaster over the other Strats and Teles. Look out if My Son's PRS Custom 24 is in the room!
