In all candor, I'd be embarrassed to take one of these "replicas" onstage, be it Jimi's hapless "Monterey" guitar, Eric's "The Fool", Harrison's "Rocky" Strat, or a guitar with huge "SRV" letters on the pickguard. No way would I ever consider myself worthy of those icons and I'd feel like I was committing blasphemy.

+1 !!

I'm not partial to Artist Signature guitars for much the same reason, and many of these are much less identifiable.

cheers!

That said, there seems to be a demand for them or Fender would not make them and ask so much for them. I for one would not buy one since I can build my own for much less and sometimes using even better or more authentic parts. Granted it won't have the "official" COA which makes them technically "collectibles", I just look at it as an art form to build and as a tribute to the guitarists I enjoy listening to (also a form of flattery). Granted sometimes I like the guitar better then the player but that is more the exception then the norm. Sometimes I will make a "tribute" that is not an exact replica of the original but just has the "flavor" of the actual guitar built more to my specs.

When's the last time you saw one of those Monterey Jimi guitars onstage? Local working stiff or popular artist? How about an SRV? Yngvie? Rory?

I've never seen anybody playing one of those things. I've seen a few Claptons, couple of Crays, one or two Danny Gattons, but that's about it. IMO Fender builds the more flamboyant tribute guitars for collectors -- most of whom are merely fashionistas and don't even know how to play the instrument. But that's hokay -- I am pro business. So anything that makes the corporation a buck is fine. They just won't be making anything off of me. And like many, I can build any damn clone I want. At a significantly lower price point than Corona.

I never claimed anyone was taking them onstage but I have seen players using the SRV signature model and other signature series. But someone is buying up those clone guitars from Fender and using them for something. Otherwise they would be giving them away and not asking so much for them, or not make them at all. I bet most who buy those have never set foot on a stage...well other then the real expensive ones such as the EVH frankenstrat masterbuilt ($25,000) and the real SRV #1 accurate copies ($24,000ish) that I imagine a handful of successful musicians/celebs have since they can afford them and like the novelty/bragging rights. I think some have the Monterey as well granted those can be had for $20,000 less at this point and don't take near as much craftsmanship as some other clones.

Where we agree is that both you and I won't buy a clone. If I want one bad enough (be it for personal reasons or to sell), I make it myself as I stated in my last reply and never implied anything else. But I can understand some who can afford them might just be doing it for the collectiblity and since some of these are produced by Fender custom shop in very limited numbers could potentially increase in value (but don't always).

Granted it seems this guy is not too ashamed (or proud) to bring a Monterey strat clone on stage (does he burn and smash them too?)

I have a Signature Series that I really like.

Image

Of course, I had to make one modification to it. It really needed Gibson '57 Classics in it. And I think the Zebra pickups make it look not so Lawrence Welk-like.

Image

I'm not sure anyone would recognize it as a Signature guitar unless they actually had one. It's a Robin Zander Sig. To get a guitar like this in mint condition for $450? I had to do it. It really is a great guitar.

That is a cool $@! guitar. For 450 I would consider it. I was thinking I do not have any signature guitars I ever purchased but I do have a Kenny Wayne Shepherd neck that I bought to use on a personal build because the specs are just what I like. However the signature will be removed.

I need to make some kind of string damper for it. I was hoping to find something online or in stores, but nobody seems to make one. I want something that clips on the strings between the bigsby and the bridge. There are a lot of harmonics coming off it from that area.

That's not quite where I'm talking about. I need it in the area between the tune-o-matic and the bigsby. That area is seriously like an electric harp below the bridge piece. When you try to palm mute, the harmonics can inadvertently go off.

At the moment, I use a piece of foam. But I don't like having it touch the guitar finish for any long length of time. Too many horror stories of finish damage due to things like that. But I was hoping to find something that looks nice. Something I could just clip on the strings. I'll figure something out.

Bear in mind we are talking about a man who is not ashamed to announce publicly how often he "pleasures" himself. Just saying.

With the guitar looking so good, I take it the usual cigarette filters isn't an option?

Hmmm..well a piece of foam makes the most sense. Perhaps you can back the part of the foam that touches the body with something safe for the finish although I can't really see the foam hurting it. Just remove it when you are not playing so the finish does not fade around it over time.

Yea, the foam is fine for recording. But it looks like crap. I have a few ideas about something that looks nice.

I've seen players using Clapton, Jimmie Vaughan, Slash (Les Paul), and SRV signature models...and the only person who actually played like the namesake of the guitar was the wanker Vaughan-abee playing SRV tunes all night.

The other guys just seemed to pick out a good, well-built guitar that met their desired specs...the Jimmie Vaughan Tex-Mex player was actually playing jangly pop-rock, a la REM!

And although I love the neck profile on the SRV Strat, I couldn't bring myself to play one on stage. They look nice, they sound nice, but even with a replacement pickguard, that lefty tremolo will brand it instantly as a "#1" model, and I don't want to be compared unfairly to the late Mr Vaughan. I love his music, but I am sick of his imitators and sycophants.

Therefore, I made my Fenders into what I want them to be, electronically and accessory-wise; changed out pickups, pickguards, knobs, etc., and it becomes a Screamin' Armadillo signature model...

Agree.... I build my own "signature" models that are to my specs, and build the clones to sell. I don't really care the reason people buy clones but their money is still good to me. However I am such a Hendrix fan that I might do the Monterey just to have since all it really requires is a 60s reissue and an artist that can hand paint. It was not exactly a Van Gogh or Rembrandt. I don't think I would bring it on stage unless I was doing a Hendrix cover because that guitar is so recognizable and so iconic to any Hendrix fan and they would expect me to sound like Jimi on it all the time or smash and burn it...not gonna happen. I mostly just want it to go with an authentic picture I have of him as part of my Hendrix "shrine" lol.
