It's been a great thread. All we really can go by is our opinions.

In all honesty though, I'd have to say your conclusion surprises me a little. Based on your own observations, non-musicians including women will pick up your Les Paul and recognize it by name. Musicians will pick up the Fender.

Wouldn't it be logical to think that there are more non-musicians and women in this world than musicians, and thus the result of the experiment would suggest that the Les Paul would be considered more iconic?

So was the question regarding which is the most iconic player/guitar combo or which brand/model popular electric guitar in general? Either way there seems to be no right or wrong answer but it was entertaining to read all the different opinions. All I know is when I see any popular electric guitar, if it is iconic that speaks for itself. Not that important to me if it is the "most" iconic one or not or if every non musician can name it or not.

"I am asking the, ahem, musical question: when most people think of an electric guitar, what do they see in their mind's eye?"
This depends on age, older eyes would think Gibson semi-hollow ES 355 et al or Gretsch country gent styles then Fender Tele or Precision Bass (true icon)

"So, why do the guitarists immediately focus on the Strats, and the non-musicians focus upon (and know the name of!) the Les Pauls?"
Your group has good taste but is limited in knowledge of electric guitars so, no worries, Airline Supro Silvertone Mosrite Rickenbacker are just words to most people.

"I would really like to hear opinions on this subject, thanks!"
Your welcome. Today, without question, the Stratocaster is and the Les Paul is as well, but, the Precision Bass owns that icon category because Leo and George created a first for bassists. IMHO YMMV (to quote my favorite Martian)

As far as guitars go,I'd say the strat, then the tele, then maybe the les Paul.strats have been around forever, played by musicians from all walks of life from beginner to profesional, used for all styles of music, copied by a ton of other companies and it seems they are most often the brand of choice when needed for tv/movie props.it also seems like alot of famous guitarist who may play les pauls probably have used a strat or tele a time or two and have at least one in their collection but I don't know if the same can be said about strat owners having les Paul's in their arsenal.obviously there are some but probably not as many.and as far as the most iconic player/guitar combo goes...Eddie van halens white/red& black striped frankenstrat is probably pretty unmistakable....and it's a strat shaped body..I'd love to know the total number of strats produced since its start.

You also cannot lose sight of the fact that Fender guitars are simply cheaper to buy and so get in the hands of more musicians than a Gibson, Gretch or Rickenbacker.

cheers!

Excellent points all, "cereal killer".

The fact is, there are two schools of opinions......those held by guitarists (whom are bound to have an affinity for their particular choice of instrument) and the perception of the public at large (who base their belief on general exposure to the enlightenment of the media). Ergo, no "winners" -- no "losers". Merely another entertaining discussion.

This particular 67 Strat here is pretty iconic...and got burned and smashed to bits at Monterey. Fender Custom Shop made 200 replicas I believe and I am sure they sell for over 5 grand. I am considering making my own replica and borrow the talents of my cousin who is an artist to hand paint it for me.

Before I got involved with guitars, the only guitar that stood out to me was the Bo Diddley ax. Iconic.

In all candor, I'd be embarrassed to take one of these "replicas" onstage, be it Jimi's hapless "Monterey" guitar, Eric's "The Fool", Harrison's "Rocky" Strat, or a guitar with huge "SRV" letters on the pickguard. No way would I ever consider myself worthy of those icons and I'd feel like I was committing blasphemy.

But that's just me......

I can only offer that the last time I took my wife to the guitar store, she kept pointing out "that pretty one over there, that Cherry Starburst color". It was, as you expect, a Cherry Sunburst LP.

The last time we went to the guitar store.

So, Joe......did you give that forlorn Les Paul a new home?

Funny story there, we did, actually...not the Gibson...but an Epiphone...and not quite a guitar, but it really screams when plugged into a big amp:

And one more, one more thing...

If Joe Walsh hadn't talked to Jimmy Page about buying that '59 LP, he might still be playing a Telecaster, and be known for that...

I agree 100%. Same when I see someone playing a Fender "SRV"..it is like dude, if you can't play and sound like SRV what is the point? And of course I expect that when I see one. So in closing, I would never bring a replica on stage even if I am able to sound like the artist or not (unless it was a tribute cover band). It will hang on a wall next to a picture of Hendrix I have as a "tribute" and I would play it now and again to practice or jams....then probably sell it once I got a good offer or build another for someone who saw it and has to have one. Or maybe just list it on eBay for an outrageous price and see if anyone bites

+1 !!

I'm not partial to Artist Signature guitars for much the same reason, and many of these are much less identifiable.

cheers!
