Hello Friendly Guitar Addict,

I'm not a fan of reliced equipment,
but if the price is right.

Cheers.

Some of them are beautiful in my opinion. Would I pay extra for the realistic damamge, probably not. I'd rather have a nitro finished axe and do my own damage over time. The way the guitar gods wanted it to be.

Interesting topic. Thank you.

Most likely would not order or buy a 'relic-treated' guitar, but might well buy a real one if a seriously (honestly worn) one called out.

I did buy used guitars that had dings and wear on them.

That was long before they would have been called "relics."

I certainly got them cheaper than that if they were like new.

Now, I guess, they are worth a premium if I were to sell them. Cool.

No, I wouldn't buy a freshly made guitar that was beat up to look old. I wonder how much of that is done by hand and how much is computer driven cookie cutter templates. Either way, just another reason to tack on hundreds of dollars.

I'm not about to buy one - if I wanted a used looking guitar, I would buy a used guitar. If I buy a new guitar - I want it to look new.

Now the re-issues that look and feel like the original, those I'm interested in.

The '52 re-issue Telecaster looks very nice to me.

where the Custom Shop Heavy Relic '52 doesn't interest me at all.

Just my 2 cents.

I once saw a program on the Discovery channel, "Made in America". It showed the Fender factory and how they made some of the "relic" guitars. They had that guy from the TV show "Cheers", as the host of "Made in America". The people at the factory invited him to help in the relic process. What they did was take a ring of keys and dropped it on the body to make the nicks and scratches. Somehow.....I don't think I'd pay extra for that "special treatment."

But then, everyone has different tastes.

Some them are okay and very artistic, or sort of artistic-destruction, and if I saw one I liked, and had the money, I would get one. What gives relics a bad name are the relics you find on eBay that tend to look more like power tool or woodshop class accidents....

Being a relic myself :D I prefer that new guitar look than the relic look. I would not buy one but rather let the guitar grow old natually if not gracefully.

No; IMHO a beat up guitar is a beat up guitar. If it were a 54 to 70 or so genuine article that would be different but I'm not paying new prices for a beat up guitar; BUT to each their own.

If it was a vintage guitar that looked kickass or if it was Slash's guitar or some other famous artist's guitar...

That would be the only way I'd buy it...

It's about the feeling, nothing else....
I don't even notice the 'relic'ing' when playing a relic'ed instrument.
Yes I somewhat think it's fake to get a pre-won guitar, but it's only fake to those small minded enough to judge a player on his guitar
and if the deal is right, then who cares about looks? :?:

Got my relic for 14.000 dkk used, that's the same price as the more expensive am vintages goes for as new. But the difference, oh boy!! :P
And it's cheaper than a Les P
The CS relic's go for 25-33k new

It's like passing the chance to spend a night with a nice girl/lady because she has 'enhanced looks' (don't read it as chauvinistic)

My point is, what kind of madman would I be if I turned down a wonderful instrument because of it's looks....
