I had always wondered if "back door man" by Willie Dixon (of course covered by the Doors and others) was metaphorical for something else I can not get into detail about here..

As a general rule with song lyrics, whenever we start wondering if there's a double meaning... there probably is. :D

Could be but might not always be the case. I think there is still controversy as to if Lucy in the sky with diamonds meant LSD or not. The one who knows for sure denied and took it to his grave.

Often in music like with most arts the viewer will interpret it differently then the artist meant but most of the time the artists are fine with that as long as it meant something to someone the rest is irrelevant...... they felt they did their job.

Re Backdoor Man,I remember reading in a music publication interview with Willie Dixon years ago that a backdoor man was a guy who would "pleasure" women who were feeling "neglected" by their husbands by coming in through the backdoor while her husband was leaving for work through the front door or by leaving through the back door when he came home.

BTW: When Willie played at our uni in the mid 70s,I took it into my head that I was going to meet one of my all time heroes come hell or high water. When he took an intermission after his first set,I walked past all the student union security guys and wasn't even given a second glance, when I opened the door to backstage he was sitting on a chair turned backwards with his arms folded on the back of the chair.I just walked over to him and introduced myself, shook his monstrous sized hand and told him how much his music tore me up whenever I listened to it.I chatted with him about his music mostly and the different versions done by different artists.I asked him what he thought of Jimi's cover of "Hoochie Koochie Man" and he said that he thought it was great and said something along the lines of "Man that cat could play." I asked him if he had ever met Jimi and he told me that he had to which he added and I quote verbatim "He was a strange cat...but he was cool." Anyway I had chatted with him for 15 or 20 minutes and as I turned to leave he got up and I shook his huge mitt again and only then noticed how big a man he was,he was like a mountain with legs.I was really pleasantly surprised that one of the most important blues songwriters and singers in the world would take the time to chat with a young fella barely out of his teens and obviously with a bad case of hero worship. He was a gem in every way.

Ah you not only got to meet, but talk with one one my favorites. If not for the influence of dudes like him I might never of had the inspiration and love of music that got to me practice for many many many hours a day. Even though I have never been in a blues band per say (have jammed it a heck of a lot though with others) and usually end up in heavier rock bands, every time I pick up the guitar the first thing that comes out is something inspired by the old delta or texas blues. Some have even said I sound like Johnny Winter, I take that has a massive compliment even though I am not trying to sound like him....he got it from the same place I did.

Well thank you soooo much guys, there is no way I could have come up with all these lyrics on my own. It is sad to notice that songs like this one are not easy to find anywhere on the net, and without your help, I would have had to choose another song than this one. Thanks. Claude.

May I elaborate, better yet pontificate on the extraneous nomenclature that was presented to me. Hmm, understand disciplinary remains mercilessly....I don't know?
