Jah, I'm not even talking other brands of digital reverbs and effects. Just Fender. Those old Fender units were built like their guitar amps originally. Hand wired and tube driven. Sounds like you found an old FET driven FR 1000. Still a spring reverb unit if I remember correctly. They dabbled in solid state but it wasn't well received back then.

I should be more clear. Fender doesn't have the experience of say, Line 6, Digitech, Ibanez, Boss etc. in the digital effect arena. I find Fender's digital effects laughable, noisy and childlike with evil amounts of noise and gain. I know you can dial it out, that's what I do on my GDec and I run the GDec through an extension cab on the rare times that I even turn it on. I've tried many from the GDec to the Mustangs. I don't like their modeling much either. I think Line 6 and others do a much better job. I'm not saying people can't get a good sound out of them for what they are, I just doesn't suit what I do. I don't like the stuff for myself, but I have no problem with someone else liking them. There is a dynamic feel and response in a tube amp that's just gone to my ears and hands with a solid state amp. Some tube amps will do the same thing to me like the Blues Jr. In it's stock cabinet, it makes me cringe because it sounds so boxy to me especially when you push it. Run it through a bigger cab, and I can deal with it and get some decent tones out of it.

I kind of plug and play. Turn it up, move a couple tone controls and I'm good to go. I don't have the patience to fiddle with parameters. I'm just too old school I guess.

Word. I think I'm going to go back to a vintage Bassman head. 8)

Nothing says it more than my 5e3 Deluxe clone. Usually I jumper the channels and mess with the two volume knobs. The tone control usually stays put. All the fancy pedals and stuff run through the Egnater. I just don't need anything with the clone. No reverb or pedals required, just my guitars volume knob. It depends on the gig. Sometimes I bring both amps in, the pedals with my A/B/Y box. If I just use the clone, the Egnater is my backup and stays in the car unless I need it.

I'm not really a fan of anything digital in terms of guitar.

I've played through them, they're just too annoying to dial and sound kind of hollow to me.

However, if we're talking solid state, let me take you back to 1986 with my Peavey Envoy 110. Absolutely the best sounding solid state amp I've ever heard. There's a push/pull in the gain volume that acts as a tube screamer circuit essentially, and it sounds so warm and saturated, just way different than traditional solid state.

The clean channel is also great, the reverb is absolutely beautiful and sparkly. It sounds pretty classic and surfy, and can also sound ambient.

The Peavey Transtube Series were really good sounding solid state amps. I've used a Bandit on occasion and I was pretty happy with it. Really reliable too. I get invited to sit of fill in with bands regularly so I wind up using whatever's on the stage at the time. Sometime's it's fun to try new and different gear sometime's not. One jam I went to, the host builds his own amps and sells them. He invites people to push them pretty hard. None of them were over 20 watts, most were around 10-15.

Supro, are you sure you're referring to the right person? I never mentioned a fender reverb unit. Only reverb units I own are the Digitech processor and a newly purchased Biyang pedal that's soon to be sold right back. Not natural enough for me.

I don’t disagree that the mustang can be a bit hard to dial in at first. I was honestly about to throw mine out the window after I got it because it sounded a bit boxy to me. What I ended up doing was picking a few of my favorite models, paired it with the best sounding cab which for me turned out to be the 65 Deluxe and assigned the Fender 65 spring Reverb and a Plate Reverb to the Reverb knob and some basic chorus, vibratone and tremolo to the modulation knob. Now its pretty easy for me to dial in and I don’t really require Fuse. Do I need 24 presets or 16 amp models for that matter? Heaven’s no. I really only use the 57 Champ, the 65 Twin, and sometimes the 59 Bassman. Its simple, sounds like I want it to and It allowed me to just ditch Fuse which was my goal because I hate being tethered to a computer. I have my gain, volume and tone knobs right there plus a couple extra doo hickey knobs that give me some reverb and chorus if I want. My only regret is not springing for the III if only for the LCD display. I just didn’t need the extra wattage or 100 presets… too bad they don’t make a Mustang 2 and a half

Eventually I’ll be upgrading. I’ll probably get a 65’ Deluxe Reissue but for now the mustang is a lot of fun especially having discovered the 57 Champ on this thing.

But I totally get why people can’t be bothered with it. I’d love to see what JS thinks of it if he does pull the trigger on one and gets to know it a bit.

Captain, the important thing that you mentioned is that is sounds like you want it too.

I won't knock something because it's digital. But far too often, it's digital sounding, which I really don't want in a guitar. My old Casio CZ-1000 synth does a far better job at that.

Case in point, I have a TC Electronics Trinity reverb pedal, which does have a couple of good natural-sounding reverb effects. I can almost believe I'm in a big hall and hear natural reverb, at the price of losing a little bit of top end. But then they ruin it by having the 80% other reverb types being digitally sounding. Yuck. So it's in my "for trade" pile.

One of the reasons I decided to experiment a little deeper into the Digitech TSR reverb is that it has adjustable Bass and Mid EQs as part of the parameters. It's also made to be a quad reverb, you can adjust front, back, right and left if you use all 4 outputs. Obviously of little use for an effects loop, but the more I hone in on all of the adjustments, the more natural sounding it's getting. I can save banks of different reverb sounds.

Cool unit. The octave effects are insane in this processor too.
