Yesterday I received an email announcing the release of a new effects pedal saying that it was basically a phenomenal development.I had my doubts but clicked on the link and proceeded to be blown away more than I have by any other pedal. This pedal is the B-9 organ simulator pedal from Electro Harmonix. It's no exaggeration to say that this is most likely the most incredible pedal that effects pedal guru Mike Matthews has ever made. The pedal was demoed using just a guitar and an amp with no other effects just a hint of reverb. When I heard the first notes I was gobsmacked,it sounded identical to a B-3-not a cheesy pseudo organ sound that remotely sounded like an organ but it nailed the B-3 tone.It also had a really cool jazzy B-3 setting as well as a pipe organ simulated voice that you would say without a doubt was a Casavant Freres pipe organ from some great cathedral,if you were blind folded. There is also a Vox Jaguar/Contental tone and a couple more great tones.hat really makes this more versatile is that you can actually mix the guitar and organ signals and send each one to a separate amp.I have one on my Christmas list as barring Fender coming out with a $500 dollar Rosewood Tele or Strat, nothing else will sway me from wanting one of these puppies.Check out http://www.ehx.com and you will get the info and demo on their home page.I couldn't find a price because all the links they put up to dealers never came up with any of them having the B-9 in stock or any info on it at all.I would hazard a guess that it would be at least as expensive as the POG in the over $300 price range, but even then it's a steal considering how authentic its voicings are.

BTW: The only downside that I can see from this pedal,is that once sales start taking off,a lot of keyboard players will getting their walking papers from the bands they play in.

Electroharmonix do some very clever envelope/pitch shift/modulation pedals and the demos are fun to watch but I always wonder how useful they really are. I suspect that like most pedals they're interesting enough to make you want to buy them but not useful enough to make you keep using them. My guess is it would end up on ebay fairly quickly.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Hi Gilga Frank,I have several E.H. pedals-some I have owned since the very early '70s .I have an 1st run Electric Mistress,a ram's head Big Muff Pi from '69-'70,a Bad Stone phase shifter-again a 1st run and a 1st run Frequency Analyzer.I have also owned a very early Small Stone and an original Crying Tone pedal ( not at all like the current ones, this was a huge pedal with 4 wah wah settings as well as a volume function, all of which could be reversed in their sweep.)the Crying Tone was traded for of all things a Vox Phantom XII-I guess the guy really liked it too.I also had a Memory Man Deluxe for a short time but it mysteriously went missing"Anyway with the exception of the Frequency Analyzer I have relied on all of these pedals gigging since the early 70s and they have withstood all these years of getting stepped on kicked around had beer spilled on them and many other kinds of abuse.I find that E H makes a pedal to suit just about any need that a musician has and where I always played a lot of Hendrix covers a phase shifter and flanger were just about indispensable and although I have all kinds of distortion ,overdrive and fuzz pedals-some quite expensive-I have always eventually ended up going back to the Big Muff Pi.where I also double up on keys when gigging,I'm sure that the B-9 would also become an important part of my effects chain. After over 40 years none of my E H gear has ended up on ebay and it's very doubtful they ever will as I'm sure that I will always have a use for them.Cheers.

Ouch, another skeuomorphic interface.
Not only is there no tactile feedback, unlike a real pedal, but trying to use a tiny knob that's just pixels on a screen is far more difficult than the real thing, and far more difficult than a screen friendly interface too. There's a reason why displays tend to use +/- buttons - hardware if possible - and a numeric value that shows the current setting.

Will the next version of this have a picture of a guitar too, so you can leave your guitar at home and press images of frets and strike an image of strings?

Hi BMW-KTM,that's a cool pedal board but unfortunately anything more complicated than crayons is just impossible for me to grasp with my analogue mind.I have a fabulous Vox AD-120-VTH with the VC-12 footcontroller and it has 128 presets that you can use or customize to your liking but I am just able to avail of the most basic of its functions. It has a user's manual with over 60 pages and it's just way out of my comprehension. It's funny that I can dismantle an electric guitar and reassemble it,set up an entire PA system on my own etc. but I can't get the hang of these digital devices at all.Give me an old analogue pedal chain with pedals that have no more than 5 controls and I'm happy and can do quite well with it but give me anything digital and I'm lost.I'm just another analogue man in a digital world.

BTW I have a great new to me, used Yamaha Magicstomp guitar effects processor and even though it's digital I am having some limited success in figuring it out-so there may be hope for me yet.Cheers.

Yea, this is going to be a "must have" for me.

I debated it for a while. I have a Yamaha Motif. But, I mean c'mon. It's just too cool of a thing to pass up. I've gotta get one of these. It's perfect for Reggae.

Guitar World lists it at $294. This is a great addition for a guitarist. :D

guitslinger,

Thanks for posting the link to the B9 pedal. I was amazed at the demo video.

I never owned any kind of effects pedal until Nov of 2013 when I bought a used Behringer Delay. Now I have 3 delay pedals and a Boss CE-5 Chorus. It is fun playing around with them. I just can't make up my mind which delay I like best :D

This B9 pedal may be something that finds its way into my gear. I'll probably never get a lot of use out of it, but it sure is impressive in the demo.

Jerry

I've been thinking of getting the Earthquaker Devices "Organizer". It sounds rather warm and analog, which I like.

It's also "standard" pedal size, and not too expensive. What I don't like is that the input/output are at the top, which makes it harder to pedalboard it (straps holding the pedal down by the plugs won't work).

EHX is incredible with all their latest innovations with pedals. BUT... while I think it is cool that they built the B9 pedal, it will NEVER replace a real, true, genuine, Hammond B3.

There's too many variables involved with a real B3 versus a guitar and the B9 pedal.

Guitar: 22 frets, 6 strings = 138 possible single notes (if my math is correct).

Hammond B3: 2 x 61 manuals (keyboards) plus 25 note bass pedals underneath = 147 possible single notes (if my math is correct).

Now for someone with a more mathematical brain could calculate the total number of possible notes played on each at one time, you'll see that no matter how you look at it, a guitar just can't compete with a real true organ, note for note, musical staff notation, etc...

No maths needed. The frequency span of a Fender guitar is less than 4 octaves, and you can only play a maximum of six notes at a time. Which notes you can play simultaneously are severely limited due to the shape of the hand and fingers. And you won't have unlimited sustain on a guitar, even with stomp boxes.

Then again, there are things you can do on a guitar that you can't do on an organ, like bending or sliding one note while not bending another. Or walk around while playing it. (Jon Lord is the exception that confirms the rule.)

Instead of trying to mimic an organ, what a guitar successfully can do is to take on some of the qualities of an organ, when needed, while not losing track of the fact that it is, indeed, a guitar.

Technically, I don't think it replaces a keyboard or good key player.

In reggae, there's a technique called a "bubble". If you were to consistently be able to pull off a bubble on guitar, you would be from another planet.

Another thing to think about is that a keyboard can be split to have different sounds from the lower to higher keys. I believe up to 4 different sounds typically. In a lot of ways, this pedal can't do what a keyboard can do.

But it's just so cool anyways. I would probably never use one to record, I have a Motif for that. But live, that pedal would be great fun for the audience.
