Quite a few "major" guitarists used cheap guitars on their first recordings.

Hofner wasn't known as a high-quality guitar until after Paul made their basses famous.

The now discontinued DR-1 'Back Talk' Reverse Delay (in the big metal case) is actually pretty good to my ears, does that 'backward tape'effect well without messing with programs. Their other pedals don't really turn me on, though.

I have a couple of the pre-2003 DC (double cutaway) reissue basses, and I like 'em. They're not Fender or Ricks, but they remind me of a Hofner with a nice round sound, easy to play, and light weight-plus they're long scale, and pretty easy to set up. I never cared much for their reissue six-strings, too thin sounding to me, even the RI Dano Baritone model didn't grab me. I'm not talking about the original 'vintage' models, though.

My understanding is that Dano (Evets Corporation, the company that does the reissues). actually quit making guitars for a few years after 2003, then came out with new ones in the last few years, with a new headstock shape. If it doesn't have the original 'Coke bottle' headstock shape, odds are it's one of the 'new' models. Correct me if I'm wrong, I might be!

Despite all the conflicting views, I decided to purchase a Danelectro, dano 59 reissue.
The original version of this model is the one that was used by Rory Gallagher, Page etc, etc,
It has not arrived yet, but i will be sure to give my honest opinion when it does

I assume that these opinions are not meant to constitute an endorsement?

What can you really expect out of a guitar that sells as cheaply as a Dano does? I'd take one over a squier or a cheaper Epi any day. The lipstick pups still sound like nothing else, and for live performances it can be nice not to have six pounds of wood and metal round your neck. They're still great for punk (cuz who cares about tone in th punk world?). I'm planning on getting one some day, but dealers are rare.

I use three Fab pedals: the Echo, D-1 Distortion, and the Metal pedal. You can only get one sound out of each one, but I love that sound. As far as durability, i use mine for gigs, as long as you pop in a fresh battery they have never failed. The lead guitarist had a DS1 and a Hothead that both failed live. Plus, they're 15 bucks... You can buy a spare and its still half the price of a 'real' pedal!

I really use and abuse my BLT reverb pedal. The slap echo sound is amazing, and infinitely variable. Has a very authentic sound. i use it for all the Raveonettes covers I play (which is the vast majority of the 6-string work I do).

Plus... Have you seen their electric sitar? a normal 6-string with 13 drone strings attached to one 'buzz bridge'. And its around $300! I plan on getting one in the next year. If you have no idea what it is, google it. It will amuse you.

In 1965 I bought a new Silvertone guitar with the amp in the case. I wish I still had it.

Have anyone played one of the new Dano 63's I would kind of like to try the Baritone.

As far as the guitars. I think I remember seeing Tom Petty using one, and the band who does the theme for Friends, The Rembrandts, they use one...

Tom Petty, and his lead guitarist, Mike Campbell, pretty much have one of everything. ;)

I'm no Rembrandts expert, and they probably do have a Dano somewhere in their gear, but in the "Friends" period they were more known for Rics:

Image

On their current official website there's only a handful of photos, but everything they're pictured with is pretty high-end stuff, Gibsons, an Anderson, Fenders.

Fwiw, I haven't played Dano's but once in a store. In general the re-issues are frankly at least as well constructed as the old ones, though the non-adjustable wooden-bridge reissue models are probably best avoided, if only in favor of the upgraded ones that were given an intonatable bridge.

Their pedals have a pretty good rep but I'm not a pedal guy.

Essentially the guitars, especially the RI's with the lipsticks pups, are a niche guitar with a pretty specific sound. I would consider one of the upgraded lipstick RI's with an intonatable bridge if I ever came across one locally for a good price. But that's only because I already have a batch of other guitars and most of the sonic "bases" are covered by what I've already got.

They're not an endorsement from me as such. Danos are completely different animals from Fenders-or anything else for that matter. Sometimes different is good. Variety is the spice of life. I'm not ditching my Fenders for a Dano, if that's what you mean.

I have two Harmony built '65 Silvertones, the hollowbody triple pickup/single cutaway/ Bigsby trem (originally equipped) ones. They're top of the line 'Sears' mail ordered models (which may not be saying much), but they're perfectly acceptable guitars that have survived well over the years, and they're playable. They're definitely not Gretsches and wouldn't keep me from getting one, but they have a snarky charm. especially when played loud. Again, variety is the spice of life.

i personally own three danelectro fab pedals wich i used before i got my fender fm65dsp. since then i haven't used them but they were very decent pedals. danelectro makes about 15-25 pedals for about $15-$20 i think. their not bad. never played their guitars.

My Dano DC 59 finally arrived.
First impression, while it is pleasing to the eye it feels weird. The body doesnt feel great.
The neck feels fine.
The fingerboard is also fine.
The action is horrible, and its difficult to play in comparison to my tele's. Its good for slide guitar, from the little I played on it.
It seems to go out of tune fairly often. (I only got the guitar on Fri last)
However, when it is plugged in, it sounds great. The 'lipstick' pick ups deserve their high reputation. A great variety of tone is available through the 2 pick ups. The tone knob works adequately. but the volume knob is only on or off, (its not meant to be like that)
In conclusion, obviously not a high end guitar, but it must be said, overall excellent value for money.
Its sounds great, honestly. It looks great but plays just about ok :)

Yeah, the old silvertones and the silvertone 2/12 tremolo/ reverb amps were great. I owned that rig in the early 60s but wound up selling them , Big mistake.
