So, if I jiggle the cable, the sound will kind of come through again.

The jack is also really holding the cable tight for some reason, it hasn't before.

I'm guessing some kind of power plant.

Oh well, she's 35 years old, let's get the repairs going.

Well that's a quick fix solution to a lack there of guitar maintenance! :?

No way that the jack is causing the shock, it is the amp ground circuit (or lack-thereof), not the guitar. The jack might be bad, causing sound drop out or noise, but in no way, shape, or form, can it cause a shock.

It's amazing to me how many people here don't seem to understand this.

I'm sorry I don't know everything there is to know about guitar wiring, however, I do know that the sound dips in and out because of a failing jack, and that I received a shock, whether or not they're related, That's up to my local repair guy. Next friday I get paid.

No problem Buxom I think we understand you dont know everything about guitar wiring. Your problems are not related to one another. You it does sound like you jack is going bad however this will not cause you to get shocked. The problem is either with the amp or the wall socket. If you can get hold of a wall socket tester that will tell you if the wall socket is bad. You seem like a handy guy you should change your jack yourself its not hard and you will start to learn about the wiring. Good luck with it.

I would, but I'm really not going to risk any kind of catastrophy with a guitar like this, I value it too much.

All the more reason to learn to do it your self. Its a rather simple thing but I understand. It is a cool guitar.

+1

I have a Partscaster though so that certainly helps alleviate the fear factor but it has certainly been educational doing all the work on it myself (with the help of the folks here of course)

As others have said-it's most definitely not the guitar,it's just a coincidence that the jack is faulty and naturally you figured that was the problem but the root of your trouble in in the amp or in the wiring in your wall outlet. Have you tried another amp with the guitar or tried that amp in another room or even someone else's home?If you do these things, this may help you isolate your problem.

+1 on the outlet. Not saying it couldn't be a ground issue on your amp but I've seen many cases were the outlets were either wired wrong, someone didn't bother to buy a receptacle with a ground or older places that used wire that didn't have a ground wire at all, only a hot and a neutral. I've gotten the same "shock" in people's basements with outlets that looked right but were not an outlet that was running to ground. People buy replacement outlets without grounding lugs that are meant for metal outlet boxes with conduit and install them in plastic boxes creating a problem for a guitar player.

have the entire amp looked at......the old Univox I posted pics of in a previous thread started giving mild shocks........then it electrocuted me almost fatally when a transformer went bad and a power tube exploded !!
i'm saying the shock put me on the floor and melted the wiring and some electronics in my guitar....burned my fingertips and almost knocked me unconcious.
don't risk your life, have the amp looked at.

is it putting out a "sweet" smell when it's being played? (burning varnish from transformer windings)
