So I have come to a bit of a crossroads in regards to the speaker cabinets. There is some water damage to the bottoms of the cabinets. I am not sure how far up it goes, but there may be a bit of mold too. They also smell pretty musty. I have had them outside for a bit, but another airing out would probably help.
I am trying to decide what the best plan of attack would be.
I have 4 options:
1. Leave it
2. pull back tolex carefully, attend to damaged area, clean and reglue
3. strip the whole thing, attend to damage and re-tolex
4. build new cabinets.

Option 3 can be done with spectacular results. Check out this thread  viewtopic.php?f=12&t=91456&hilit=eaten

Thanks for posting that. I am leaning towards the strip and and re-tolex, but I was considering new tolex. I found a pretty close match.
I lack a workspace at the moment, which is kind of slowing this project down.

ok....i'm finally back!
nice speakers....just like mine........

Image

the rear reverb adjust is for decay time....
when running both cabs, what ohmage do you set for? the friend that gave me mine said that 1 cab=8ohms, 2 cabs=4ohms & a full 4 cab set = 2 ohms.....and he bought it new in '70.
and IIRC one of the 2 "bright" channels IS a master v channel.......

gotta go visit your soundclips now as i'm REALLY missing my monster.

I just creanked that reverb asjustment. I want full on reverb!
I actually haven't plugged both cabs in at the same time. The one cab was loud enough in my basement suite.
We were supposed to gig at an outdoor biker rally this weekend and I was going to set up both cabs, but our bass player quit the band at the end of July and we haven't found a replacement yet.
I did not know that the ohms should change for multiple cabinets. Thanks for the tip.

well KRAP !!
I went and listened, and now I miss it even more !!

maybe soon i'll build one of those handwired power chassis kits to slip into the old headcab.
still have the 8x10 stack -2 spkrs i'd have to replace, but that'd be easy.

the reason mine's missing 2 spkrs is because the origional owner said he pulled them because it gave the cab more volume projection...= actually louder w/6 spkrs than 8.

never ran it w/all 8, so I can't absolutely verify the validity of his claim, but he used it in some large venues.....and I personally was heard "crystal clearly" at 3/4 of a mile with it on more than one occasion in a busy small town.

if it's not "monster loud" i'd surely follow everyones' advice about going further into the head re: re-capping, etc.

A re-cap is definitely going to happen within the next month or so. It wasn't as loud with the bright knob down, but pull that knob and it gets crazy loud!

After a long debate of a few months, I have finally decided to retolex one of the cabinets.
I will not be doing this myself. I may sell the other cabinet to help fund the re-tolex job.
I received my tolex order yesterday. Its a bit darker than I would have liked, but there were not very many options for navy.
Maybe I can shine up the head to help it match a bit closer.

Looking good yoda ! Armor-all the amp head, that should give it a darker shine.

I pick up some polish and will shine it up soon!
I have taken forever to get this thing off the ground. Due to lack of workspace and funds, I have had this amp put away for almost 6 months! Well, no more! The head is going in for a recap tomorrow. I'll be pulling the speaker baffle and getting the cab packed up for delivery to be recovered!
It's finally happening!

Here is a little update on this lengthy project.
I sent out the cabinet mid December to have it recovered. The mold issue was not as bad as originally thought. There was a small spot that was rotten. It was cut out and replaced. I have received it back and it looks awesome!
I had the head recapped in early December, so everything is almost ready to go! I put it all back together only to discover a speaker sounded buzzy, like a light distortion was applied to that speaker only. I took a speaker out of the other cabinet and swapped it, so it sounds much better now. I will give it the full test tonight.
Here are a few pics of the recover.
