The guy who owned it said something happened with a transformer and he blew a couple of tubes. He worked at a tv station at the time and just grabbed some tubes from there.

"something" happened to a transformer may no be good.........
at 1st, my head started emitting a "sweet" smell, that I know now was burning varnish....
then yellow smoke and a very loud BRRRRRRR noise, at which point I yanked the guitar cable from the head and shut it down.
a few days later, after checking all the tubes and seeing none blown, I decided to try it one more time.......BIG mistake.
the total wattage on that amp is 300w (output is 105)
everything seemed fine at 1st.....no issues.....then BLAM, something exploded inside the head, & I was hit w/a shock that not only put me on my knees, it burned my fretting hand fingertips, and made my left arm numb for about 20 minutes.
at this point yellow smoke is POURING from the head, which is literally SCREAMING thru the speakers, and my wife was yanking the wallplug because I couldn't move.

the next time I tried playing that same guitar (through a different amp of course) it wouldn't play at all plugged in.......when I opened it up to find out why, I found almost all the insulation melted off most of the wiring, and later discovered the volume & tone pots on the neck pickup both ruined, as was the neck pickup.
yes, those transformers are Beasts !

Bender , you are starting to scare me! I found our email communication and he said he plugged in without a load and took out a couple of tubes.
Regardless, it sounds like you gotta becareful with those transformers!

JahSoldier, thanks for your info on the tubes.

Supro, I've been thinking about building pedals from kits too, but my electronics knowledge is pretty minimal. Post a clip of that univox fuzz if you can!

let me/us know what the amp-tech says.......if it's too gone for you to want to repair, i'd sure entertain buying it & having it repaired .

my Mrs. would be VERY happy !

For sure, I'll post the diagnosis. Shipping from Saskatchewan Canada to Alabama could get pricey! I am now off work for the week. I hope to get the cabs outside to clean them up and air them out, but its still raining and the sun has now been pushed to Tuesday.

Well, I got sick of the weather not cooperating, so I decided to clean up the head inside.
I pulled the chassis. There is a bit of rust on the transformers. What do you think Bender? The plug will need to be changed to a 3 prong as well.

A little before and after, minus the hardware. I want to clean the rust off the hardware and repaint. Is there an easier way, other than sandpaper?

I'd use a wire wheel on a drill or put a wire wheel on a grinder.

Too bad I don't have a vice.

I'd pad a pair of vice grips.

I ended up soaking the hardware in vinegar for 3 hours. Seemed to do the trick.

That's a great job for an ultrasonic cleaner - it's a good thing to have on hand, comes in handy all the time. And it's easy to talk the little lady into getting one, since they happen to make great jewelry cleaners too.

Edit: that head has a real cool look to it. Love the color.

Thanks for the idea Strings.

I cleaned up the cabinets today. I pulled the speaker covers, unscrewed all the screws but I can't get the speakers out without force. Maybe its glued? I don't want to force it.

They are probably not glued but stuck. They come out from behind so if you want to try prying use something wide. The other options are to try to break the "seal" by a back and forth motion at the magnets or a careful "tap" on the surface area of where the basket meets the wood with a rubber or wooden mallet.

I should clarify, I am trying to pull all eight on the wood frame at once.

ok.....i'm back from "browser" issues........

I wouldn't plug that in until it's thoroughly gone over.......that 1 transformer doesn't look good, also, 1 power-tube socket non stock.....yeah, the tech needs to swap it over to 3 prong.....tried doing that myself and well.....you now the story.

the speaker panel comes out from the front, should be (IIRC) 10 wood-screws holding it in...they DO tighten w/age so a power driver is a must.
