My son has several strats, and yesterday I got a call from my girlfriend that she found a guitar at a garage sale out of town for 10 bucks. I said grab it my son can always use as a parts guitar.
She got home last night and the headstock on the guitar said Fender made in USA . So thinking we fell into something really good I started looking the guitar over. Could not find a sereal number anywhere on the guitar. Even took the neck off, and all I found was at the bottom of the neck blue numbering saying IC Jan 00.
Are there any other clues that might indicate to me whether this is a true Fender or not. One thing that is unusual is the headstock says Fender made in USA, but does not say Stratocaster anywhere on it. The owner said the guitar was left in the house many years ago.
Also the set up seems unusual to me, instead of the 3 single coils on the body, it has two single coils, and the bridge pickup seems to be two single coils bound together to in a configuration that would be more of a humbucker set.
I’m just looking to see what I MIGHT?? Have before I go into full on restoration mode.
Any info would help

Yep.
...and even though it may or may not be a genuine Fender guitar, that doesn't mean it isn't a useful tool, whether for jamming, parts or serious performing.

My son has many oddball guitars he has fashioned with parts from others. We call them "Ratocasters". The guitar needs some work and my conundrum is weather to resore this guitar or canabalize it. Don't want to destroy something that could be of value. I have just never seen a strat witout any type of sereal number. I'm at work, will take pic tonight and post.
Im sure the neck is Fender, its the rest of the guitar I have doubts about. I just wonder if the pots or pickup switch would be marked.
