There's been a Marshall JCM-800 Lead in my local pawnshop for months.

I finally asked about it today, and was told the tubes are bad and that because of that, it's only $450.

I think that's a great price, considering the fact that they're insanely expensive. My local music store carries tubes, and I could probably get a set for a good deal if I explain my situation.

I'm considering biting the bullet and saving 3 or so paychecks.

the guy who I take my guitars to for repairs has a JCM900 head sitting there,

I eyeball every time I visit the shop..
at this point, I'm pretty sure it's mocking me,,,

he wants 600 (USD) for it, but he keeps saying "it's negotiable...." I keep saying "yea, but.... I can't..."

"sure you can..."

he's right,.. I think...

It'll take me 6-10 weeks to save if I'm careful and don't have any major gear issues.

I'm thinking about it, I know my cab would be good with it.

I'm thinking I'll try to talk them down to $425.

If all it needs is tubes don't wait any longer. Jump on that.

It might be risky, as I'm confident that they don't have a clue other than what they might have been told. Check their return policy, it might be "store credit" only.

Why would they take an amp on pawn that had bad tubes? I don't trust pawn shops in general, and this story sounds fishy to me.

I seem to have a knack for bringing dogs back from the dead. I'd have a list but it's too long.

This is excellent advice.

No one ever regretted buying a Marshall JCM800.

That would be cool. Based on my own similar experiences with the old "only bad tubes" story, plan on finding a few burnt resistors, mainly the screen grid and heater pull-down resistors.

If you try the amp out, don't forget to have a look round the back while it's switched on (not in standby mode) and see if any of the output tubes are red-plating. The internal heaters should glow brightly but the dark grey plates should not light up at all. Red plates mean the tube is underbiased and carrying too much current. If the tubes are bad in the amp then they may be old and worn out (most likely) or they're badly biased and the owner hasn't noticed.

If you see red plates then argue the price down - it's an easy fix with a bias probe but the sales staff won't know that.

Here's a video of what to look out for, it sometimes takes a minute or so to develop but it's unmistakeable.
