I was just surfing through the Seymour Duncan website when I came across this. I think it's a pretty good read, even though majority of the things are already known to most of us. http://www.seymourduncan.com/blog/the-players-room/recovering-from-a-broken-string/

funny, at first glance, I was picturing some kind of grieving process before moving on to a new string.

I, too, though it was about the mourning process.

I rarely break strings--I have a fairly light touch and make sure my saddles and nut are cut correctly and there are no frets buzzing/wearing against the strings, so it's not a problem very often...

I usually have a second guitar with me, too, but it's usually tuned to a different tuning (Open G most of the time, Open D on occasions)...one time a little E string with a new set of strings popped during the first part of a song, so I had to change guitars midstream (the bassist took a solo)...and started playing the song with a slide instead of "normal" fretting/fingering technique. The rest of the band and the few people who understood what was going on gave me a lot of credit for pressing forward.

The funniest time it happened was to a co-guitarist...he was a difficult bandmate--showed up late, played too loud, alcohol abuse issues, and did not want to take a suggestion from anybody about anything. He was an Island Unto Himself.

He was also notorious for breaking B strings, especially during heavy whammy bar wrangling. This was his favorite guitar, and he refused to carry a second guitar (even though he owned several)...so when the "B" popped during the first song of a four-set bar gig, he grabbed my second guitar, not knowing it was tuned to Open G. Since he had (multiple times) refused our request to either (1) get his guitar fixed or (2) carry a second, I decided to let him figure out on his own what was going "wrong" with my guitar. He finally said, "How do you play this thing? It's out of tune!!"

That was the night he finally let me inspect his guitar and I found the burr on the B string saddle.

He ended up quitting a few months later because we also insisted he stay sober when we played. Oh well...

yep, I've had that same situation before, but my backup was usually 'Drop D' tuned, so I just had to make sure I played everything 2 frets higher on the low 'E' string. I guess that falls under 'adapting'. Unfortunately with a Floyd Rose tremolo, once you break a string, the guitar is going to be out of tune for at least the remainder of the song.

Yep, my mind just went in that direction for some reason.

While the floating bridge does create a problem it also presents the remedy. Like everything else that is learned a broken string can be compensated for by "leaning" on the "bar". Seems awkward at first but after 20-30 times it doesn't take much to find that "sweet" spot.

He was my string, and I shall miss him. Ne'er will there be a truer tone.
It wasn't just a string that fell apart, but the music from my heart.
Rest in two pieces, my trusted friend. Your supreme sacrifice will not be forgotten.

Now where did I put those Cobalt .011's?
