Let's face it. All of us; at a certain point of time; are unable to play on our favourite Strat, Tele, Precision, Jazz, whatever, due to something or the other taking place. I; myself; am unable to play on my Strat since I had developed a huge and painful abscess on my arm a few days back. I've undergone surgery and while I'm okay now, it will be quite a bit of time before I'll be able to play again. Haven't you all gone through a similar phase? Do share your experiences and state how you've dreaded not being able to play your favourite instrument.

About forty years ago I suffered a gunshot wound to my left (fretting) hand which required about three months to heal and fully recover. I didn't have access to a guitar during this phase of my life so my desire to play really wasn't a factor. The same incident when I was injured also claimed the lives of two very close friends and I was more saddened by that than anything else. One was a roommate.

In 1980, I was involved in a work accident that shattered my left wrist (21 places) It took years before I could play, and really I have never been the same.

But I won't give up, it's not painful like it used to be back then, it's just dexterity and speed.

Sorry to hear about that. The loss of close friends is absolutely horrendous.

21 pieces? Ouch, that must've hurt real bad. Anyways, keep on rocking! Many great songs have a slow tempo ("Comfortably Numb" by Pink Floyd being a prime example). IMO it's not the speed that determines the skill of a guitarist, rather it is the amount of expression he/she puts in his/her playing. If you put forth the expression while playing, then you're awesome. :)

Peace!

+1

"Little Wing" and "Bell Bottom Blues" are two more splendid examples.

Restrained yet tasteful.

as I get older aches and pains in my arm sometimes limit my playing time. there are days when it is tough to hold a pick.

my biggest issue comes from concussions suffered in 2 car accidents about 10 years apart. my ability to concentrate has suffered, and I get easily frustrated if I try to learn something new, and I sometimes wind up putting the guitar down and walking away.

After getting banged up pretty bad from being ripped by a tailgater in a rear end collision, I got a keyboard and started learning how to play piano. It filled the void while I couldn't play guitar and ended up being a cool thing to be able to play now.

When I was in high school I broke my right wrist in a couple spots. Kept be from playing bass for a while. Which led me into getting interested in other things and abandoning the bass when I went in the Army. I had a 12 year gap where I didn't play. My wrist never really healed correctly and I have a definitive loss of range of motion and ability with it. I have never been able to really trem pick since. Which is mainly why I play fingerpluck or fingerpick style now. My wrist doesn't ever relax enough or swing enough to use a pick the way I should. I can do all downstrokes and that's good enough for the few songs I might ever use it on.

I've had some on, and off injuries over the years since 1968, but luckily didn't hurt my playing to bad. One thing that's maybe a bit odd, when I don't play a bass for two, or three days, my finger tips on my fret hand throb, or ache. I start to play, and all is good. 8)

This is amazing and constructive. Quite a good thing to do. Isn't it true that being able to play a piano helps playing guitar a bit?

Old age is inevitable. Cheer up, at least you can still play. I've seen young chaps quit playing because they feel "tired".

Don't get me wrong, but shouldn't a bass primarily be played using fingers? Well, if it is so, then I guess you're absolutely fine. Keep rocking! Peace! :)

Nah, if ill, I may wish I was well enough to play, but I'm not obsessed about it.

I broken my index finger once, but I didn't stop playing. Instead I learned to hold the pick with my second and middle finger in place of the index finger. After a while, it became so comfortable, I almost didn't switch back after the finger healed.

I get a general malaise when I haven't played recently, even to the point where Lasy Armadillo will say, "Why don't you go play your guitar so you'll be nicer?" :?

As far as aches and pains, I got plenty, but I just learn to play "around" them. Lately, arthritis in my left shoulder makes me periodically sling the strap over my right shoulder (a la Albert Collins) to alleviate the pain somewhat. I'll alternate shoulders, because the right one has some issues related to a (surgically repaired) labrum and rotator cuff. Lately I've been thinking of getting a Thinline Tele or other lighter-weight guitar (my Tele is HEAVY!) to help this along.

I'll play until I can't, and then I'll just sing until I can't...then I'll just look at the crap I accumulated and hope somebody appreciates what I did.

You might want to consider a double strap, to reduce the load on either shoulder:

Some of the Thinlines weigh more than non-thinlines, at close to 9 lbs. The lightest non-CS one is probably the Select Thinline, which weighs a little over 5 lbs.

But anyone who wants to buy a Select should probably do it soon, because there are signs that Fender may be replacing the Select series with the Artisan series.
