Orville guitars were made and marketed in Japan from about 1989 -1998. They had a range of quality/price points. Those marked "Orville" were the lower end, those marked "Orville by Gibson" were the higher end models. The ObGs are about the best the Japanese could do (and used USA Gibson pickups) and really rival the US versions.

They were never sold officially in the USA, so they command pretty good prices here, even the lower end models.

A bit earlier than that actually, OO. I had a buddy in the Navy who bought one in Japan around '83 or '84 when the Nimitz made a port call. Cherry S/B finish, big buckers, chrome hardware. A well-made guitar even if the rustpicker never learned how to play it.

Yeah I figured since the few I saw were selling from Japan and the shipping price as well was adding up too. I had a feeling at those prices they must have been good and are somewhat desirable now. Of course never hearing of them before was suspect but when I looked at the pics they seemed not like the Chibsons but the real deal and just like a real Gibson other then the headstock name.

Perhaps I am a brand snob... though I do own a Yamaha and a Cort in addition to Fenders and Gibsons. I was really just curious to see what they were all about

So, I do now own a counterfeit guitar, shame on me.... but I promise I won't be ordering any more. Now I'm off to the shop to install the Fender neck I just bought to replace the one on my Squier
