The fact is that 88.3% of all statistics are made up on the spot.

I have seen scammers posting ads on C/L for phony-baloney CS guitars. Mostly Fender's but some Gibson's and PRS's as well.

Arjay

I have a Custom Shop with a serial number that starts with CN. Many Korean imports also start with a CN in the SN. So I checked with Fender Customer Service and they confirmed the serial number as a genuine CS before I bought it.

At one time I had it for sale on CL and a tire kicker emailed and asked for the SN. I gave it to him and he then hinted that I was possibly trying to rip him off. I understand his concern but I was still a little bit miffed. I told him one call to Fender customer service would clear things up and he didn't need to insult me. Didn't hear back from him and then I decided not to sell the guitar. I'm kind of glad now.

You got it, mud.

And when they end up here, as invariably many of them do, we have to deliver the bad news like some oncologist reporting a negative prognosis to a doomed cancer patient.

What's most heartbreaking is when the hapless victim is some youngster just starting out who delivered newspapers and mowed lawns all summer in order to buy his very first Fender.

Hate to break this to you Arjay, but kids don't mow lawns or deliver newspapers all summer long anymore...they work at Micky D's and demand $15 an hour to get your order wrong!

On DHGATE DOT COM. HERE:

Which is the instrument on this page: http://www.dhgate.com/product/2013-new-arrival-custom-shop-guitar-maple/164867750.html#s6-6-1|2065231589

I didn't make up that percentage out of thin air. It is estimated that 1% to 10% of drugs get intercepted by authorities. (UK heroin intercept rate is estimated at 1%, US/Mexico border overall is estimated at 10%.) You would expect a smaller percentage of fake guitars to get intercepted. So I halved the minimum figure for illegal drugs as an estimate since customs is really looking for drugs and other contraband such as currency, gold, stolen art, exotic woods, banned animal products like ivory, Cuban cigars etc and not guitars from China....like THIS ONE:

I went to this site and noticed they have stamped on some models on the back of headstock Made in USA. That is just wrong in so many ways. I was about to post the site with the picture of it, but decided not to advertise for them

Um, no. Drugs != guitars. Drug smugglers make a lot more profit and face much more severe punishment if taken, and have an entire police force working against them, so they work much harder at getting the contraband through without detection.
Extrapolating the estimate for drugs to guitars is meaningless.

Yeah, one of those "ways" is the fact that it is just out-and-out illegal. There actually has been a huge crackdown. The China sites used to brazen picture the counterfeited logo, but now many are covering the logo in the picture or not including headstock pictures. Other counterfeiters have gone to not including the logo on the headstock at all making it more of a normal copy.

On a related note, one of my local pawn shops has a Gibson Les Paul Supreme (China copy). I played it, and it was surprisingly okay -- with nice maple top, rosewood board, intricate inlays, and (shockingly) pretty darn good fretwork and binding. I askwed about it, and they admitted that they can't sell it over the Internet. I walked out thinking that I don't think they can legally sell it out of the store, either ....

You're prolly right -- they know it represents a blatant violation of proprietary rights.

I recall years ago seeing this Chinese website that sold "Fenders" and others. The most obvious things were the ridiculous low prices and the fact they put a Fender logo on a Music Man bass type instrument.

Another thing I've always found rather funny is the counterfeit warning on the Ibanez website. Talking about coming full circle, considering their early output.

Several years ago when Gibson had a factory just a few miles from our house in Mt. Pearl Newfoundland,my daughter used to work there installing the necks, tuners and electronics. They used to get factory seconds from other manufacturers-a lot of them from China-I was surprised by the quality in some no-name Strat influenced guitars. She and her sister gave me one of those no-name Strat themed guitars one Father's Day and I was surprised by how great it sounded and how well it played for a guitar that most likely was destined to retail in the $!25 price range.I would imagine that for those uninitiated in the guitar world,it would be quite easy to be mislead by a "legit looking" guitar that sounded good as well. The real pity is that a lot of these guitars are not only being sold for bargain basement prices but a lot of people are getting stung for big bucks,it's about time that these swindlers get shut down. All of this makes me wonder if any of these factories that are selling these fakes are in fact also some of the same factories that are making "legitimate" low cost Fender bargain lines as beginner guitars and for "starter packs".After the unfair and often unscrupulous and horrific treatment of its Korean workers by Cort-who after being found guilty of human rights violations on top of unfair labour practices moved their production to China-I have little faith in their ability to do everything above board. Companies with such a lack of scruples as these, certainly would be apt to do anything and stop at nothing to save a dollar or to make a dollar.

Those are clearly fakes but one ad clearly acknowledges that it is a copy. The other ad with the CS logo is trying to mislead but they're selling the guitar so cheaply it's hard to call it a rip-off.

I was expecting fakes being presented as the real deal with prices to match.

I have to come clean... I was curious to see if I could make one of these cheap-o fakes playable. I bought a $320 Black Beauty from China which included a crappy hard case and shipping. I added new electronics (including a middle pickup), a lot of new hardware and parts, and it's a cool little guitar. As good as a real Gibson? No way. Could it pass as a Gibson? I doubt it. But it's a good player and sounds great. It needs some fretwork still but I'm on the fence whether to spend the money to have it done. I thought of "learning" to do fretwork on this guitar but it actually plays good enough that I wouldn't want to damage it while learning to hammer frets.

I get that counterfeiting is wrong but like many have said, the bigger crime is passing a fake off as real which I'd never do. Oddly... many of the parts were actual Epiphone parts. I wondered if they were stolen from the Epi factory or where exactly they came from. I know they make fake Epis too which is ironic, given that they're already Gibson knockoffs. I will say this... even the quality of real Epiphones is far better that these fakes. Unless you're really handy working on and setting up guitars, I'd steer clear. Anyhow... interesting post, thanks for sharing.
