Avoiding counterfeit goods

Although most guitarists would quickly spot crudely made fakes such as those seized in New Jersey, they might be taken in by an alluringly low price online accompanied by a glossy photo. Two ways to protect yourself are:

1. If the price is too good to be true, it’s most likely a fake. Avoid the temptation to order on the off chance the guitar is the real deal.

2. Shop with reputable, manufacturer-authorized dealers such as Musician’s Friend to ensure you’re getting the real thing

You got it, mud.

And when they end up here, as invariably many of them do, we have to deliver the bad news like some oncologist reporting a negative prognosis to a doomed cancer patient.

What's most heartbreaking is when the hapless victim is some youngster just starting out who delivered newspapers and mowed lawns all summer in order to buy his very first Fender.

Very ironic! Fakers seizing fakes.

I wonder how many thousands of dollars we paid for this "sting".

Some interesting, both absurd and valid comments under the article about the guitars.

The photo in the article makes that fakes look very nice. I'm also surprised at the variety. I'm guessing someone bought a bunch of "Corts" and put lipstick on those pigs.

I find it hard to imagine that only one each of these counterfeits would have been made and therefore wonder, how many of each were actually produced, and where are they now? It would seem to represent the scope of a quite large and capable counterfeiting endeavor.

A very good point. Probably a smaller percentage of knock-off products get intercepted by customs authorities than narcotics. (There are no guitar sniffing dogs.) So I figure maybe about one-half of one percent or less get intercepted. So for every guitar intercepted there are at least 199 more that go through.

These makers are pretty brazen, they sell them on the internet. I ran across them a few years ago. They are also faking Custom Shop models with the CS logo on the back of the headstock.

If say a good portion of them are sold domestically in China. Hence why Fender has started making non-Squier models in China now.

History repeating itself.

I also think one thing that feeds this market are the stupid prices for American made guitars..

Where did you see a fake Custom Shop instrument?

I have seen scammers posting ads on C/L for phony-baloney CS guitars. Mostly Fender's but some Gibson's and PRS's as well.

The Custom Shop guitars I've seen on CL have been legit, although some of them misleading.
They start out as real Fenders, usually a MIM, and then go through a "Custom Shop" to be modified. Note that I said "a" Custom Shop, not "Fender Custom Shop".
So you get the original Fender sales tag, and a COA from Bobafettscu's Custom Shop.

Ah. POOYA numbers. Let's make it 5.73% then. Makes exactly as much sense.
