Has anyone ever tried something like this? I am really interested in what you have to say

Me being the rationalist and the skeptic I am, I can't say whether this would work. People do walk while sleeping and talk while sleeping so some sort of brain activity is going on (as proven by the researches in medicine), but could we actually use that to our own advantage and channel the activity to achieve a certain goal?

I will probably try it, it can't hurt. Although my insomnia definitely won't help the cause as I might find myself awake all night long while I am trying to fall asleep and doing body movements in my mind

Frankly, I feel you would get a lot more out of practicing the instrument via mental workouts... while you're awake.
You can do it while doing everyday things like washing the dishes... enjoying your morning coffee... even while driving.
Picture the guitars fretboard and your hands (both picking and fretting hand)... go thru scales... dexterity excercises... chords... ALL mentally.
You'll find that when you pick up your guitar to actually physically play it... you'll notice the benefits of the workouts you did mentally.
Try it.. It works... I know because I do these myself... all the time... and it's very powerful.

2 minutes in and this became ridiculous.
Play your guitar when awake, concentrate or focus when playing and use sleep to recharge your batteries so that you will be refreshed when playing guitar.

Strat-Slinger, you mean the mental visualization? I do it sometimes and yeah, it does help :)
Alas, sometimes the situation you are in leaves you with not much time to do that (it all depends on your profession). But imagine if you had 6h a day, every day, to do it while not even doing it consciously. That does sound appealing, to me at least :P

So I watched the whole video, and what I got from it was a dude talking about heavy joints, brains and chemicals and being half awake......from a guy who looks to be living in his Mom's garage.

I don't know, if it works for him, it might work for you, there would certainly no harm to trying as long as you remember that practice makes perfect still applies......

Yeah man... the visualization thing is super powerful... Good that you're doing it. Def helps when time keeps from being able to physically play the instrument... and the benefits are tremendous.
Howard Roberts was one of the 1st to stress this type of practice. It has no boundaries... and is extremely effective.

My wife says I practice a lot of groping in my sleep. The truth is that I'm really not sleeping at all. Or am I? Thus the reason I sleep on the couch with the dogs.

I can't say that I've done sleep learning as such but strangely enough I have dreamed how to do riffs that I couldn't do before.Several times I've had dreams and actually have seen in the dream how to do certain riffs and even things such as the intro to "Foxy Lady".I'd get up in the morning after having one of these "lucid dreams" and be able to play the previously unknown riffs etc.- freaky stuff.

I've figured out song chord changes in my sleep but that's about it. Wake up and suddenly you realize that weird transition chord you've been trying to figure out but haven't quite found yet is a Bdim. Try it and voila! That's happened a few times. Of course nowadays you just look on the internet so sleep chording is no longer necessary for me.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
