I'm torn about this;
While I'm not an SRV sycophant, I am a fan, and I think he did more than anybody else to usher in the blues revival that started in the 80's and continued into the 90's.

I also agree about something that was said in the article: SRV influenced and continues to influence more young blues players than any other single blues artist in the past 30 years (I'm paraphrasing here)...

The relatively short career should not work against him--in fact it should add to his legendary status. To have gone to hell with drug addiction, beat that, return triumphantly, only to be cut short by tragic helicopter accident--you can't make up a story more melodramatic than that.

Having said that, the fact that scores of legendary bluesmen (and women) have been delayed or even ignored by the RRHOF tells you something else--the board either (1) doesn't know blues or (2) doesn't like blues.
Yes, Muddy and BB and Howlin' Wolf were all inducted fairly early on, but that is probably/possibly due to the earlier rock and roll bands (specifically the British ones) name-checking and touting those artists as what they (the artists) considered the "best of the best of American music."
It's a crime that Freddie King and Albert King were only recently inducted (that fact alone biases me against the RRHOF as a viable institution).
...and as they were huge influences on Stevie, (especially Albert), it's only fitting that he is being ignored as well.

For crying out loud, ZZ Top, Cream, Rush and KISS were only inducted (relatively) recently!! Those are archetypical rock and roll bands...how much more so will the RRHOF ignore a guy who played a type of music they obviously don't respect?

While SRV massively changed, influenced and continues to influence blues artists, he didn't/doesn't really influence a lot of rock and roll bands that are on the cusp of being inducted; the RRHOF feeds itself and congratulates itself in that manner.

In my mind, his legacy was strong when he passed away, and was sealed by the (posthumous) releases of "Family Style" and "The Sky Is Crying," which showcased his abilities in two fairly divergent packages.

Should he be there? Yep.
Does it ultimately matter? Nope.

I think the HOF likes a little controversy to keep us talking. Eventually everyone and their brother will get inducted, seeing as how there isn't much in the way of new acts coming along.

Thanks for sharing that article. I'm a big SRV fan & it is a shame that this has taken so long to come about & who knows if it ever will? He was definitely one of the "greats" on guitar & should have been inducted years ago. Hopefully they will put aside their biases & honor him as he should be.

He was inducted to the Blues Hall of Fame in 2000, and I think that is where he belongs.

The RRHOF is about money. If they can make money from him they will induct him.

How do they make money off of their inductees?

Outside of (perhaps) greater admission ticket sales, what does adding a particular singer or artist do to increase revenue?
Do they have merchandise with the likeness of inductees in the gift shop?
(I've never been there, so I don't know...)

I'm not challenging your statement, I just don't know HOW they make money in that manner...

if abba can be in there, stevie should be as well. he's a lot closer to rock and roll than they were.

Stevie played tons of blues, but played rock and roll too. He deserves recognition for his boogie.

The day they inducted those gum-chewers into the RRHoF was the day I stopped giving a crap about the institution as a whole.

"Dancing Queen" or "Texas Flood"?

Good Lord, that's a no-brainer!

I don't have a problem with fluffy pop bands that changed the music industry, changed the musical landscape (by influencing other bands or musical movements) or had longevity in a short-term genre (like bubblegum pop)...the Bee Gees deserve to be there, due to these qualities as well as the periodic reinvention of themselves.

I know ABBA was a disco phenomenon in the 70's and a lot of people have fine and fuzzy memories of dancing with some girl in a disco or the middle school gym, but I don't know if they're truly qualified to be there. If they're going to be there for those reasons, why not Billy Vera and the Beaters? I remember scrawny teenage me dancing with some scrawny teenage girl to "At This Moment" (as do dozens of people if my age group) and really being happy...does that make Billy qualified, too?

The whole idea behind that place seems bogus to me. If I cared I could look up who started this, how chosen etc, but I don't. Seems like just another roadside attraction designed to make money, period. At least it wasn't put in Salt Lake City.....

thanks arjay- I agree.

I have been to the rrhof I time years ago. it was cool to see jerry Garcia's guitars up close, as well as a doors exhibition.

when abba was inducted, I sent them an e-mail asking that they remove them immediately (harrumph). I then had them remove me from their mailing list, and haven't gone back since.
