The first difference is that the "heroin addled junkies" had more mojo stoned than the "trashy girl" sober.

The second difference is that being stoned isn't a permanent condition. To quote Churchill: "Bessie, my dear, you are ugly, and what's more, you are disgustingly ugly. But tomorrow I shall be sober and you will still be disgustingly ugly."

Hey I like Avril. Let Go and Under My Skin were great. Her lyrics aren't actually all that trashy either.

whatever. i'll buy the "she's not good enough to have an endorsement" argument. But the moral grounds one that was put forth is total bunk.

Everyone knows endorsements are about popularity and money. Nothing more. There's no reason to get all worked up because some pop star gets a signature model and someone else doesn't.

That's not true, though. There are musicians out there that don't want a signature guitar. Principles can trump money.

What I think KingofPain is saying that of all those that HAVE signature models, it is 99% only for money and marketing reasons. That being said, I think that is perfectly okay. IMO, the lay community think that those who we think of as "rock stars" actually have a lot less money than we think they do. IMO, they are well entitled to make a few bucks if they got their name to a point where it has value in the eye/ear of the consumer.

Exactly. I'm speaking from Fender's point of view. Fender makes the guitar. They sell it. They trade either money, or goods and services in trade (complimentary custom shop work, ect) for the artist to sign off on the signature model. As far as "principles" I don't see it's unprincipled to partner with a company that sells a product you use as an artist for services. I mean, I guess if your "signature model" is nothing special and is available in a production model then I suppose it'd be a little sad, but who am I to judge?

However, there are artists who legitimately have instruments that have unique specs and why shouldn't they get some kickback from allowing Fender to sell guitars based on theirs along with their name? That's just silly. Or moreover, a guy like Johnny Marr who put his own personal time into trying to design a BETTER Jaguar for his fans. Have you watched the video of him talking about it? It's actually cool to see there are guys out there doing it for a full time living and succeeding at it who are just as big of gearheads as some of us. He put in real work into the way that guitar turned out. I don't think it's unprincipled to put his name on it at all.

Most artists who go on about principles are the same clowns who pine for the violence of government to be used against people to shape the world they way they think it should be. Going so far as to endorse it and those who wield it. What principles? What a joke.

Couldn't agree more about that one.

Having said that, I own a EC Signature Strat and to be honest it is the smoothest playing Stratocaster I own. I like the soft V neck, the boost, and the Gold Lace Sensors. While I won the guitar, and didn't pay for it, that doesn't lessen the fact that it is a fantastic guitar. After having played one I would certainly have paid for it, not because of the signature on the headstock, but because it is a righteous guitar, Period. For me that is the ONLY reason to own it. Am I a fan of EC, of course, but that is still no reason to plunk down my hard earned cash for one.

Please elaborate on that, give an example otherwise it sounds like you're on your soapbox preachin' to the choir.

I'm a fan of many types of music performed by many different artists. However, given a choice between meeting a guitarist with the stature of Eric Clapton at a grand-opening celebration for a new Guitar Center or having a beer or two at my local VFW with Marcus Luttrell, I'm grabbing a roll of quarters for the jukebox and heading off to the VFW hall. And Mr. Luttrell will never pay for a drink that night.

Are you kidding? Fleetwood Mac is the first that comes to mind. There are many more artists who have endorsed politicians. Or even all the clowns who have done the "Rock the Vote". As if who you vote in to violate your fellow man with threats and violence matters.
