I'd like some opinions, the JJ in my Micro Terror is dead and it sounded like $@!& anyways.

My local store has a a limited selection, and the Electro Harmonix tubes are the best they've got. It's a $15 part that I can replace myself, so it isn't a big deal at all.

I'd just like to know what you think about them, specifically the 12AX7s.

Hey Buxom, I've used quite a few different brands of tubes including Electro Harmonix 12AX7's and 12AT7's, and they have performed, held up, and sounded great, not a bad tube at all in my opinion.

7.7 on a scale of 1 to 10, has a lot of bite with easy break up. http://www.tubesandmore.com/tech_corner ... made_tubes

EH are some of the best current production tubes made. The 12AX7 is on the bright side, with great sparkle, clean with good harmonics, and as already stated good breakup with some bite.

If there are any Chinese made tubes available, they might be better in this particular amp as far as gain, and smoother breakup. The Chinese made tubes seem to sound best in the Tiny Terror. You might pickup a couple, or few different types to try.

I have an EHX 12AY7 that I like, but I don't have any other 12AY7s to compare it to.

Most Electro Harmonix tubes are rebranded Sovtec tubes that are made by Saratov  Sovtec often cost more and an sound better. I don't know if it EH's spec that Saratov build them too or what?

Sovtek is just an Electro Harmonix brand name. EHX buys valves from many different factories, and brand some of them electro-harmonix and some of them Sovtek. This is mostly done consistently, so you know that when you buy a Sovtek branded 12AX7 it's going to be fairly similar to a Sovtek branded 12AX7 you bought a few years ago.

Sovtec, Mullard ,EH Gold , EH, Tung Sol, 12ax7's seem to be coming here from Saratov Russia and the New Sensor Corp owners. Currently setting on 3 Tung Sol and 3 Sovtec's on shelf and had good luck with them on repairs. The whole tube brand name thing is crazy with new and NOS stuff availability .

Amp sounds totally different, noticable boost in volume and gain, not to mention feedback :P

And the tube rebranding is not even a new thing - GE and RCA probably started the whole thing back in the 50s.
You really have to study the tubes to make sure who actually made it, and to what specs.

 Quite convoluted.

No, EH and Sovtek are both very different tubes, made in the same factory. EH does not buy tubes from anywhere, they are made in their own factory.

EH, Sovtek, Mullard, Tung Sol, Svetlana, Gold Lion, and others, are all different brands and all are very different tubes, all made in the same Russian factory/factories (Reflector is the original name, which has expanded to two factories now), and all of these brands are distributed by New Sensor (an American company).

Saratov is the name of the city in Russia in which the above tubes are made.

The Svetlanas I recently bought were allegedly made in St. Petersburg - same plant as one of the two Winged Cs (the one who didn't close down, but can't call themselves Winged C in the US).
If I understand it correctly, that is. It's enough to make anyone's head hurt.
