I have a Fender Jaguar HH special (MIJ from 2008). The bridge humbucker, fender dragster humbucker, is very VERY close to the strings. The strings do not hit it when i play but they gotta be extremely close. Anyone know the approximate gap these should be set at? i realize the gap settings are all very speculative but any starting point would be appreciated.

I've heard, "With the string fretted at the last fret there should be no less than 1/16th inch gap between the bottom of the string and the pickup".

I did not measure mine but they appear to be closer to 1/8th inch.

I would suggest that if the intonation is good and you got no buzz then leave it alone.

I rarely measure anything on a guitar, string height, pup height, bow, etc. If necessary, I adjust until I get the sound and feel that I like. As far as the distance between pup and strings, too close can affect string vibration/sustain, too far away and you lose output. Sometimes lower and less output gives a better tone and more sustain. Try lowering the pup and see if you like it, and if not put it back.
