Yes, this is good advice. Even if you decide to leave it as it is, you may at least want a short spray of sealant lacquer into the gash, to prevent humidity damage. Chances are you won't even be charged for that.
Untreated wood (like the inside of an acoustic) survives fairly well because the humidity can escape again, but on wood that's surface painted, you may get "paint rot" around the gash unless you seal it.

Hey everyone, thanks for all the advice. Yep, this is my first ding so it's a bit of a shock.

Thing is I don't need it to be perfect, but seeing the white on there and the deep gash bugs me. So here's my plan. I'd like to fill it somewhat with wood filler (I've got some on hand--is there a reason it would be better use bond-o though?). I'm not necessarily wanting to finish it flush but just so it's not quite so noticeable.

Then I found this website the Guitar ReRanch, that sells pens with Fender colors, and yep they have Lake Placid Blue. The pen is only $8.95 so it's not much of an investment and should be more than enough for the small job. They also sell a clear lacquer pen so I can give it a bit of a gloss.

I'm thinking that if I don't make it flush with the finish, if I screw up then I can always add more to it and if I do it close enough for my liking and it's a little low, then that' OK too.

If and when I do it, I'll take some photos and pt up a post documenting the work.

Standing by for any and all advice, criticism, and comments that I should "learn to love the relic'd look." I appreciate 'em all!

Just be cognizant of the fact that not all Lake Placid Blues are the same. I've got three different Fender instruments in that finish and none of them match one another.

Good point, Arjay. And I'll keep that in mind but I'd just like to make it not quite as noticeable, even if it's not perfect. I figure this will at least get me closer...

Since the paint is cracked down to the wood, I've had good results putting a wet towel over the damaged area and touching it with a hot iron. The steam will lift the dent in the wood. Just do it slowly and give the wood time to swell. Then you can address the issue of touching up the paint.

Can you explain how this works? How does it pull the ding?

Ha - that one's new on me. I'm amazed to see a metallic finish in one of those touch-up-pens. I didn't think that would work - but there it is on their website, plain as day.

So if you're up for it, Highline, give it a go, why not? And please come back to this thread and show us how you get on: I'd love to see how that pen works out. Best of luck with it. :)

Hello Buxom. It works with light dents where the wood fibres are squashed a bit but not broken. The steam created by the method trv1979 outlined is just the right temperature to cause the lignin inside the cells of the wood to swell a little and fill out the space. Often, if the bump is shallow, you can get the surface to return to flat again.

In this case I've a feeling Highline's ding is somewhat too deep and the wood fibres actually broken. But there's no harm in trying.

Cheers - C

I'd use a 2 part epoxy putty * ( as used by plumbers , modellers etc.) e.g. milliput or any other proprietary brand. This is soluble in water untill set so can be smoothed over just using a little water and light finger pressure. No sanding should be needed. You could use wood stopper , but the putty is far easier to work.

Once set try and find an automotive paint touch up pen that's as close a match as you can find.(edit- just saw retros post- paint problem solved)

* something I've used on guitars, Bike petrol tanks, baths, models, new age smoking accessories etc. all with great success.

Highline, my Strats full of dings, dents and scratches. The first one was the hardest and the largest. I was tempted to get it repaired but let it go because I've seen repairs that looked worse than the ding. I just consider it honest mojo. It wouldn't attempt it myself unless you have the skills, but I have seen repairs using nail polish that made them less noticeable. stewmac.com has videos on repair stuff, maybe that would help. Good luck with it.

There could be harm in trying. Because the guitar is painted in all nearby areas, if it soaks up too much moisture, that water has no easy escape route, and you may very well see "paint rot" and flaking near the gash, as the soaked up moisture will try to find a way out.
The gash needs to be sealed, i.e. the exact opposite.

I've never sealed any of the gashes on my Strat and it's been fine for over forty years. No flaking, paint rot just the same old gash that's been there since I did it in 1973.

You probably also didn't get water into the gash :)

Nope, Just beer. Seriously, in the 40+ years I've had my Strat, it's been rained on beer spilled on it, been in smoke filled bars, you name it. It's a 72 and I've had it since it was new and it was seriously gigged. It needs another fret job, but the dings ate still intact. I was a 17 year old kid when my Dad bought it for me as a graduation gift.

Sounds like a lot of good memories! :D
