I'm so bummed. Knocked my guitar over in a rush to get practice. Not a big ding, but enough to bum me out. Do I take it somewhere, or try to fix it myself? I'm leaning toward taking it somewhere as I have no experience and would hate to mess it up. How hard would it be to fix it myself and where would I get the Lake Placid Blue paint and/or how much should I pay for a pro to fix it?

Personally I'd just leave it.. The money you'd pay just to have that fixed up wouldn't be worth it. It's only inevitable a Strat will eventually have a ding, or two. :)

If that were my guitar and I could get the right paint, I would just work a little (a drop at a time) into the worst of the dent/crack and let gravity level it out, but I wouldn't do any more than that. Try to make it really disappear and you might end up having to refinish the whole guitar... and you don't want to go there.

I had a major mishap with my Ibanez when it was my main guitar.

The band I was in at the time was bickering while packing up our gear and I was distracted by the argument and neglected to close the latches on my case. I picked it up by the handle, and my 'number 1' flopped out of its case and bounced across a cement basement floor.

Needless to say, it looked terrible. Dings all over the place, big and small. I was concerned it wouldn't even be playable.

I brought it to my guitar tech, who was a guy I knew and he went out of his way for me (he worked out of Sam Ash, but really gave my guitars some extra attention). He could obviously tell I was crushed; I gave him the guitar and didn't expect much.

Now I don't know exactly what he did, but it was absolutely amazing how he brought that guitar back. Most of the dings buffed out, but there were a few where the finish literally looked shattered. He painted something over those that sealed them and minimized the look of the cracking.

It took some getting used to, but now I like the 'blemishes'. It looks like exactly what it is, a guitar that has been gigged for years and years. And there's not another one quite like it out there.

My suggestion is to bring it to someone who can properly seal that 'gash' and minimize the look of it. That's a great color BTW.

What this means is... the guitar really belongs to you ;)
It's a right of passage....
And... the guitar has "Character" now... enjoy it... play it... treat it extra special on holidays.. bring it breakfast in bed on it's birthday... chocolates and flowers on occasion...

Can't disagree at all. OP, have a look at all of the Strats played by famous artists such as Dave Murray (Iron Maiden) or Rory Gallagher. They all used Strats which had loads of dents and dinges on them. Even Yngwie Malmsteen and Eric Clapton used or use Strats which are beat beyond hell. OP, that ding is nothing to get all worried about. IMO, it adds a bit of personality to the guitar.

True. I remember joining the forums because I was in a similar situation as the OP. Then, it was just one small dent. Now, I've got around four of them but my Strat still sounds fine, as if it were brand new. :D

Take it to a competent luthier and get an estimate. If it is half the value of the guitar, then it is probably not worth and you'll have to learn to live with it. The dent is into the wood, so it could split more later on, so go get that hands on expert opinion.

Either way sorry to see it happen, but if nothing else you learned a valuable life long guitar playing lesson!

For me, if it is not MIA then I would not even consider taking it to a professional. But, that is just me.... Is this guitar MIM or MIA? (sorry if this info was posted earlier; I did not see it)

I knocked my guitar over and this happened to the paint, any ideas? I think it'll buff out.

I hate it when that happens. Don't worry we all do it. If you could find paint, you would need to fill (bond-o), sand and paint. With that metallic paint that could be tricky. I understand the desire to keep it looking its best. If you're not experienced with wood and paint, go to someone who is. People all over do wood working for a hobby and could either help you for cheap or point you in the proper direction. Don't cut your teeth on anything you care about. However look on the bright side, it's now worth more because it's relic'ed.
