In my case the primary influences were Leslie West, Gary Richrath, Martin Barre, Joseph Walsh, and Eric Clapton (Cream era). But even with such a diverse symbiosis I still sound pretty much like me.

I sound like me, but some of my influences shine through when I play.

When I'm playing "normal" style (non-slide), I have been told that I have a Jimmie Vaughan-esque sound...not tone-wise, but choice of notes, riffs and licks...which is strange, because while I love his playing (every era), and listen to him extensively, I never specifically tried to emulate him...I guess it just soaked in over the years. Part of that may be because so many people were emulating SRV at that time (late 80's/early 90's) and the fact I wanted to "counter-point" that style, so I naturally gravitated to what JLV did/does...also, I had to teach other folks how to back up a harp player (so we could play together when I switched instruments) and JLV is a master at doing that.

There's a definite Keef Riffhard angle to my playing as well, when I'm playing Americana/Rock & Roll in Open G.

Slide-wise, I have some Muddy Waters influences as well as a large bit of Rollo Smith (Fort Worth musician) in there as well. There's touches of Ronnie Woods on that front as well.

Harp-wise (harmonica to all you non-blues cats), there's a stew of Little Walter, Big Walter, Sonny Boy II, Kim Wilson and Paul Butterfield. That last name is strange that I sound like him, because I never really listened to him at all before a year or so ago, yet we do many of the same things--we hold our harps upside down, we stay mostly on the lower register of the instrument, and our tone is similar, even though we use totally different gear...I mostly try to emulate Kim Wilson, though.

Vocally, I sound like an amalgamation of Delbert McClinton and Waylon Jennings.

I've been told (back when I was in a band) that when working on guitar solos, that they always start out sounding like Clapton. So then I'd change it around and come up with something else, and they'd say "That sounds more like Terry Kath back in the early days of Chicago".

So, I guess you could call my sound a cross between EC and Terry Kath.

A cross between Justa Beaver and Tiny Tim. But seriously folks if my style "sounds" like anyone it would have to be Jimi Hendrix,I stress the word "sounds".I obviously don't have his speed, finesse or proficiency but over the years of doing a lot of his covers when playing professionally,I have absorbed through some kind of aural osmosis, a lot of his trademark tone, riffs and playing "tricks",especially with regard to 4 and 5 step bends and occasionally more and the method whammy use.

When I first heard Jimi's music it just made a connection with me that hit me stronger than any other and really inspired me to take my guitar playing much more seriously and it really helped me become a better, more expressive guitarist and to play with real emotion-you could say that he guided me to the conduit that flowed from my soul to my hands.

I think the question is more appropriately posed as "what influences do you hear within your guitar playing?". Like most people I can't say I sound exactly like anyone, but I can certainly hear various influences in the way I play. Having grown up playing in the late 60's and 70's I can clearly hear influences like Joe Walsh, Eric Clapton, Ritchie Blackmore, Alvin Lee, Joe Perry, Brian May, and Jerry Reed on my more country-ish twangs. I think we all borrow a little bit here and there and eventually come up with "our" sound. Depends on what era you grew up in and the who the guitar gods were at the time.

That's the way to distill a thread down to a single concise observation.

That is a generalization, and like most generalizations, there's elements of truth and I accuracy in it.
True, many/most guitarists heard something that moved them that was "current music when they started playing (and usually concurrent with their teenage years).

However, there are players like myself, SKCopperTele (Kyle) and Texas Guitar Slinger (Rebecca) who all were more influenced by and play like artists of generations past. Many of my influences "hey day" was before my birth, and the rest of them weren't necessarily "popular" by the time I started playing. Rebecca even more so than me, since she's a generation or more younger.

Kyle has a definite 50s/60s/70s bend that shines through in everything he does, and he's even younger than Rebecca...

So I will partially (and respectfully) disagree, just from these three examples.

I think every guitarist should be able to find his own way to play guitar without copying one style or another; of course everybody is influenced by some or many players but it's definitely important to be able to communicate with a personal language.

Personally I listen as much as I can different style and try to take some licks / phrasing in order to increase my experience and open my mind. Surely some artists who've influenced me are: SRV, Angus Young, Mark Knopfler, Joe Bonamassa, Robben Ford, Springsteen, Jimmy Page.

No, it can not. I can never get a guitar to sound like my mother singing me to sleep as a child, or the sound of the willow flute my grandfather whittled, or the sound of my tear hitting my father's coffin, or the sound of a young girl whispering sweet nothings into my ear.
I certainly can imagine those sounds, but can never sample them, and can never get a guitar to sound like them.
However, my guitar can help me remember those cherished moments.
