A study in contrasts, isn't it. Perhaps they need a leaner, meaner product line, keeping what the vendors demand most and leaving the rest to either the Design Your Own or Custom Shop option.

Indeed. Though considering you can't actually build a "vintage style" instrument in the ADE "vintage style" options then we end up back at the CS, anyhow. If Fender is cool with driving away business who am I to argue? Even the boutique makers don't really offer well made vintage spec Fender clones. Most of them fall short at the neck specs. So Fender likely feels they are safe. The fact that most of the newer CS "reissues" and "vintage style" models seem to favor the 9.5 radius anyhow. Even though it's not correct. Seems to make me think this is where it's going.

In the end as a bassist I'm sure this has little to do with me. For a company that is responsible for one of the most influential instruments in modern history they seem to give it very little respect. The basses will simply follow suit with whatever makes sense to the majority of guitarists. Just as it has for the past few decades.. Which shows a complete lack of understanding on the part of the people running this company as to the differences between guitarists and bassists and the instruments they play. Fender will end up like Gibson and the rest churning out "basses" which are simply big, low tuned guitars. That sound and play like garbage.

Recall having a discussion on this somewhere in the distant past. The 9.5 radius, medium jumbo frets and 'nines' in the string guage stable were an effort to make string bending easier for the more technically challenged until they built their chops to the point where they were ready to climb 'Mount SRV-erest' in their tone quest.

Which to me I'm fine with on the non-reissue or vintage style models. However, churning out Classic, Vintage and CS 50's and 60's era works with modern radii, profiles or fretwire is a little circumspect. Especially when there are actual vintage models not being offered anywhere in the american made line. It's not like there aren't a bajillion models of everything already with 9.5 radius necks, medium jumbo frets and modern C profiles.

Well, they've just done a '54. Next milestone would be a '57 which had a v-neck and deep off-set waist cut. The' 58 was the advent of the 3TSB with a softer v-neck, and the '59 introduced the rosewood board and a 'D' neck profile. What's more would one need? The next big jump would be to the big head stock. Of course, one's definition of 'vintage' has to be continually modified as the years roll by and likely should be defined as well, by milestone developments. 'Vintage', for me, still remains '50's Fenders.

I'm referring more to the basses on this one other than the "Era" examples. They've discontinued the CS Limited 55 P. There is NO single coil American made production run single coil precision. (ie: no AVS 51, 53 or 55 P) Vintage spec or otherwise. The Custom Shop now has the "Proto" P which is basically a 55 with modern frets, finish, bridge, and a pick up swap to the TV Jones.

The Single Coil P offerings are now the Squier with no vintage appointments and inferior materials. The Sting with some vintage appointments and some inferior materials, and the Dusty Hill with again non-vintage appointments but at least quality materials, and that's it. Even before when the 55 P was there earlier in the year. It was still CS to get true vintage specs, or high end and import compromises.

There is plenty of fat to trim at Fender. While from a MFG standpoint making everything the same spec certainly reduces cost and streamlines your process. It will also cost you market share. There are tons of companies out there churning out modern spec clones. Not many churning out true vintage Fender recreations. Abandoning that seems folly. To me, anyhow. Whether Fender thinks the CBA supports that I guess remains to be seen.

I'm certainly not advocating that. More on along the lines of what GM did when it dropped Pontiac and Oldmobile from the product line and assigned a designated market share and demographic to the surviving three. Even with that, each division is now being choked by their individual versions of the same types of vehicles. Between Fender, Squier, and Custom Shop, FMIC offers 169 different Stratocasters, alone. UFFF!

I hear ya. I just hope we're not heading for another late 70's kind of era here. I'm being torn right now when it comes to getting my next (and likely final) bass. It will either be a used CS 51 or 55 P, or just go whole hog and take the plunge and order myself a custom built bass from the CS. Any purchases I have planned after this next bass are only in regards to getting myself a new rig next year and finally leaving the hybrid behind and going back to full tubes. It's been almost a decade. It's time. SO should they decide to do this I won't personally feel it. However, I think it would be a damn shame.

42 mm width Modern C. Anything else is an abomination to my hands and fingers.

12-14" radius. 1 11/16" nut. SRV is nice. Or whatever is closest to a 59 Roundback. Modern C is just a bit thin, but it's not bad.

Early 70's "D" shape, which I have been told is similar to a 59. This is 100% my favorite.

Least favorite, and I really question is it was even a real shape is the "U" which is unfortunate on all the 69 reissues.
