Hi guys,

It’s no secret that Fender guitars and basses have stayed remarkably true to their original modular designs over the years. But one thing that has changed as time goes on is the Fender neck shape. The selection has expanded to suit shifting player demands and even new musical genres. From the chunky vintage feel of the deep “U” to the slim, tapered profile of the modern “C,” there’s a Fender neck profile that is bound to suit everyone’s preference.

Tell us: When it comes to the Fender feel, which neck profile is your favorite? Why do you love it?

If you’re not sure, you can read about different types of neck profiles in this informative Tech Talk article.

Thanks for your opinions as always, folks!

The Soft V is the one for me!

I own two, a Dec. 2003 American Deluxe (version 2), and my Partscaster has a Jimmie Vaughan neck on it which is very similar.

Not that I'd discard a modern C profile. I've got a nice '93 Strat Plus that plays great.

Recently I played a Clapton Strat and that slimmer version of the Soft V was very, very nice.

I played the Clapton for 5 minutes in a GC store, and it seemed to have less shoulder than the those mentioned above.

I like the U neck from my '52 AV "pure vintage" Telecaster.

I also like the 65 neck shape.

I prefer the modern C of my AmDlx over the Soft V of my Clapton.
My friend has a '57 Tele that has what feels like a U or D shape and I like the feel of that very much.

Give me back the wider U neck of the past, and I'll be happy. There used to be four neck nut widths, and only the two narrower survived.

I understand that you try to bring in a younger audience with smaller hands, but once you've brought them in and their hands have grown, they still need guitars. Those of us with really big hands are a small minority because we can't really play modern Fender guitars as well as someone with smaller hands.

Large C for me.... like on CS guitars or the 54 reissue.... somewhere close to 0.88 @ 1st fret, but with moderate shoulder to avoid a U shape....

The best neck shape Fender makes right now is the current Jeff Beck model neck.

Deep "U" or large "C", even on Strats. Would be great if Fender could offer the American Standard series with meatier profiles as an option.

My hand seems oddly adaptable, and I don't have a preferred neck carve.

I used to think the generic modern C-shape was for me, but I've come to equally enjoy the soft-ish V on my '57 RI, and the chunky handful of my Tele neck. Not to mention the other shapes offered by, ahem, other makers' models.

Variety turns out be the spice of life, far as I'm concerned. Different guitar, different features, different sound, different feel. All good.

(Though no super-skinny shredder necks for me. C'mon: a fella has to draw the line somewhere...)

Cheers - C

For basses, 1.75 baseball bat (deep U).

I can get by with a 1.6 U but it's sure not my favorite.

Forget about 1.5s. I don't event want to be in the same room with those.

"C-shaped necks have a comfortable oval profile that works well for most playing styles."

I agree and probably my preference, but I don't mind having a little more real estate to beef things up either.

I haven't been playing long enough to know. I have MIM standard tele. I guess that's a modern c? I like feel go the neck but it causes some pain. I have tendentious in my left wrists. I am right handed.

Maybe someone can give me some advise. Anyone know if a different shaped neck would be less aggravating?

Anything but a V neck (Hard or soft or anywhere in between)--the way I use my thumb it's uncomfortable.
I do prefer a more traditional C to the modern C--but I like both--and I'm good with the U as well.

If I don't like the neck, no matter how good the rest of a guitar is, I'm not buying it.
