I recently inherited my dad's 1965 Jaguar. It has the original case, black outside with orange interior. It is in VERY rough shape, inside & out.

I need to get a new case for it (looking at SKB) but I wonder if the old one is worth anything to anyone.

Do people collect and or restore these?

I could probably do something myself to fix it, but I don't really have the time or the inclination to do it.

I'll try to get some pics up today. Thanks!

If you want it to look new or better, you might seek out a luggage store and see if they know a repair service...but be prepared to pay some big bucks.

You might also contact G&G--I don't know if they have repair services, but they possibly were the original manufacturer for the case in question.

You can see where the guitar has damaged it (the guitar has been worn by the case too)

I'm not really interested in fixing it, just wondering if it isn't total trash.

The inside doesn't look that bad--obviously it's been used, but it's not as bad as I would have thought.

If the latches work, leave them be.
The handle is pretty rough, but you can replace those easily (if you so desire).

With some patience and some glue, you can re-seat the Tolex that's pulled back.

If the case is in good "mechanical" shape, I would leave it be, just clean it up. (Damp cloth and some patience).

I might give it a shot. The latches do work.

I don't like the idea of the case doing further damage to the finish on the guitar. Here it is if you haven't seen it:

It also doesn't travel either.

Actually, you shouldn't sell that case. If you ever decide to/have to sell the guitar (which you may not want to do, but things happen), you will get a bit more cash if you have the original hard shell case (OHSC). It's just one of those little details that don't make the guitar any better, but make it more valuable on the open market.

If you want to buy a new case to protect the axe during transport or storage, that's fine, but for get rid of that case.

Do you play the guitar, or is this just a family keepsake?

The original vendor was Victoria Luggage Company -- the same outfit that made Fender's amp covers back in the day. They passed into history back in the mid '70s and G&G was subsequently contracted to provide the instrument cases.

Replacement handles and original-spec Cheney hardware remain available on Ebay but that case looks to be pretty far gone. It would only be worth repairing if it remained structurally sound. Likely it would be worth more in its original condition if it were included with the guitar whenever it was sold. Better (and cheaper) to buy a replacement case from G&G than to tamper with history.

Really well. I was able to play it long ago when I started playing before I had my own guitar. I've had a Strat for a long time, and when I played this again, I fell in love with it.

I ended up buying a 2003 '62 reissue bc I liked it so much.

Ha - beat me to it! :)

+1. Pop the old case in the attic for a rainy day: buy a new case for day-to-day duties.

Cheers - C
