Doubtful... If it were, Martin would surely have paid the appropriate fees (possibly explaining the List Price).

Then again, I cannot imagine the Wood Vault a company like Martin must have w/ board feet of amazing lumber (just in case) which is pre-Lacey (± 1900).

The Nut is Ivory, but being fossilized, it is presumably pre-embargo too.

cheers!

Yeah, but is abalone considered a tone wood?

Abalone surely isn't covered. You can buy it by the Bushel in Korea (and canned in the US). The shell is a by-product.

cheers!

Sorry, I didn't mean that in the context of if abalone is outlawed for sale, more in the sense that the dang guitar has got so much abalone on it, I wonder if it affects the sound...

Actually, I wondered about that myself...

But, if it actually is worth the money charged (aside from appointments)... Just imagine the Tone it must have...

cheers!

Well, I had many Martin guitars.

I find their intonation to be VERY poor, so I don't have any Martin's any more (nor planing to buy one ever).

Well,

Honestly, you got me thinking...

I'd never actually checked the intonation on my Martin DC-1E... it just sounded so good, and matched precisely at the 12th fret.

So, I broke out the Capo and my Snark and my Peterson Strobe and checked it myself.

The intonation is perfect along the length of the neck - at every fret.

Perhaps I got one of the good ones... :?:

cheers!

Even if I were a multi-multi-millionaire, I would pay that much for any guitar.

If I were opening a museum and wanted historic celebrity-owned instruments (EC, SRV, BB, etc.), I might pay somewhere close to that for the instrument to be displayed...and then I would kick myself for being stupid.

Yeucch. Kind of makes me think of a pretty brunette who went to a Nashville plastic surgeon and asked him for the biggest titt*** he got.

Putting to one side whether we like it or not, does anyone know who did the inlay work? Larry Robinson has done the marquetry on several of Martin's landmark guitars, though this one is perhaps a little restrained by his standards.

Though if this is an edition of 50 then maybe the inlay is done on a CNC machine?

Am I wrong, I thought Martin hit their millionth guitar years ago?

Just curious, what brand do you prefer now?

I don't know about that, but the Martin site says this is the 1,000,000th Commemorative Guitar.

Follow the link in the orig. post and check it out.

cheers!

Personally, I love older Takamines - most of them have a dual bridge saddle, which allows for more intonation adjustment without having to shave the bridge micro-thin on one side and get sharp angles on the strings.

If taking price into the equation, I don't think Seagull (Godin) can be easily beat for sound quality. I haven't met a Seagull I didn't like the sound of, but unfortunately, I can't say the same about Taylor and Martin. Their expensive models sound like heaven, but their cheaper ones... not so much.

Hi Lightnin. Well, I just got home and pulled out Larry Roninson's book on guitar inlay. Turns out he did indeed do Martin's millionth guitar back in 2002. Here's his webpage about it:

http://robinsoninlays.com/Martin/1000000/index.html

It seems this edition of 50 $114,999 guitars are the budget version; much simpler CAD-CAM machine-made in-the-style-of offerings, many years after the genuine millionth guitar.

Meh. Who wants a cheapo copy of the real thing? These are mere trinket collectibles...

Cheers - C

Yeah the price is ridiculous, but you have to admire the craftsmanship even if it is a bit on the gaudy side taste wise. As for the "Who" is going to buy it? I bet there is someone out there with more cash than they know what to do with...and knowing Martin, they are probably already pre-sold!
