I love relics, the more beat up the better, they're just cool.
I'm very glad they came about, there's just a mojo in them like nothing else. :)

Just a waste of money!

if it makes the player happy and inspires great music, then I don't see it as a waste of money. As Arjay would say, "Rawk on!"

It's definitely a 'different strokes' issue. I couldn't see the juice being worth the squeeze paying the up charge for the relic Gilmour. The NOS does just fine.

Whenever I've had the chance I've always went for the relic version over the NOS, especially when it was only two to three hundred dollars more.

The Gilmours are $800 apart MSRP. Don't know how that translates to 'street'. Depends on the dealer, I'm sure.

Interestingly enough this whole philosophy seems to be backfiring on certain models for the dealers. Sweetwater finally just sold their Relic La Cabronita Baracho Bass yesterday. Which was listed as a "Heavy Relic" but certainly didn't look it to me. A 4k dollar bass they had marked down to 2700 for months. They finally dropped it through the basement to 1900. A Custom Shop Relic for cheaper than an AVS P bass? That's a hell of a "scratch and dent" price break. So kudos to all the ragers who try to scream down people who dig these appointments. Because of the incoherent rage they display on forums like this many people probably shy away from them. Which leaves the devotees with more purchasing leverage.

*lifts eyebrow*

The only "incoherent rage" I've seen so far is the above.

Keep your eyes on Craig's List and eBay for a flip on that bargain.

No doubt. At that price I seriously considered jumping on it. I just don't want to go down the rabbit hole of buying basses solely for prospective value. I can see that being a really big can of worms. Personally I thought it was a killer bass, but I had serious doubts if I'd find that reverse Jazzmaster body comfortable. Had that been the old model with the P body? I would have nabbed it in seconds.

In the end, Relic or not. Great deal or not. I'm not comfortable shelling out that kind of money on an instrument that I don't even know if I'd enjoy the body shape on it. Honestly, I thought the relic treatment really worked on the Cabronita family. JMO, of course.
