I would seriously love to know if any of the “damage” reproduced on the David Gimour artist strat occurred on the real thing while it was hanging above the table at Hard Rock Cafe Miami. I’ve read that it was not protected in glass, in in perfect reach so I wouldn’t be a bit surprised. Sure there’s a lot of history to the scratches and dings, but not a whole lot of mojo to a ding caused by an out of control kid whacking it with a fork.

Some kid doing damage to Gilmour's axe with a table utensil would be just forking wrong.

About 15 years ago while at the Montreal Hard Rock Café, I was really surprised that an actual tour guitar that Eric Clapton had used, was literally within reach of our table,I even had my pic taken with my hand on it-hoping that some Clapton talent would soak into me through osmosis.I shuddered to think that someone with entirely different and malicious intent could cause irreparable damage to it before anyone could realize what was going on.

So if you buy a Relic’d guitar and its got a blemish on it, do they knock a few bucks off the price or tack a few bucks on?

:D

What I have often wondered is how you could tell if a relic'd guitar is in mint condition or if it had been played for a few years.Someone could conceivably sell a relic'd guitar to an unsuspecting buyer getting a high price by claiming that it hadn't been played and get top dollar for a guitar he had been using for years. This whole relic'd guitar issue has opened a whole new can of worms.

It all seems silly to me. I've lived my youth settling for beat up junk. I now like everything I own mint.

Be sure to get the cash before you take a hammer to it!

Truly sound advice. I could just see myself chipping paint off and then the buyer says, "Never mind".

I'd probably have to start relic'ing my guitar on his head.

I have guitars that are over thirty years old that don't look nearly as bad as the relic'd series ... Admittedly, I haven't ever done the "world tour" thing ...

That is my take exactly ... I have played the absolute snot out of my '79 SG Standard, so much so that the bridge and tailpiece were heavily eroded away from heavy playing, and needed to be replaced. Yes, you can tell it has been heavily played, but there are no big scratches or scrapes on it whatsoever. I would be SICK if I ever let any one of my guitars get that beat up.

Taking that one step further, someone could conceivably see a very used guitar as a "like new" "relic."

Treat yourself to the second edition of Phil Taylor's book The Black Strat. After reading same, put the question to him in a private communication and share what you learn with us.

 When you think about it Rollie, whenever you need to buy any white goods in any large retail store, if there's so much as a scratch on it then you either wouldn't accept it or, ask for a discount, another thing that would bother me with the relic's is, when does the relic process stop, would you know for certain that some disgruntled member of staff hasn't inflicted his own part in the ageing process with whatever he had to hand in a moment of rage, and would it bother you if after buying it, you found out that the ding or scratch you thought was carefully placed, was infact a size nine steel toecap boot placed not so carefully, I suppose in the end you have to trust whoever is the seller, and like you said, to each his own.

+1 John. Relic'd seems to involve suspension of disbelief to some degree  or perhaps wiki expresses it better 8)
wiki : Cognitive estrangement in fiction involves using a person's ignorance or lack of knowledge to promote suspension of disbelief.
