I wouldn't buy a relic'd car, house, boat, stereo system, piano etc. etc. and to buy a guitar that has been vandalized before sale would be just as idiotic.I still have guitars that I was given when I was 12 to 15-I'm 60 now-and they are all still in near mint condition. All the guitars that I have bought new have been given the most careful of treatment and I take great pains to keep them as close to just-left-the-factory condition as I possibly can. Buying guitars that look like they've gone through years of gigging and road trips is for poseurs. It all came about when Keith Richards wanted Custom Shop copies of some of his favourite Fenders made up,when he saw them,he decided that he wanted them bashed up a bit to make them look like the other guitars that he took on tour.It boils down to the fact that all this relic business is the brainchild of an ancient, eccentric, drug addled, maggoty rich, musician whose very existence defies explanation and medical science.

BTW: If I were ever given a relic'd guitar,I would totally refinish it-except maybe for the neck,if it was worn down to the point that it was comfortable to play.

......Who laughs all the way to the bank.

And at my age and with my net worth I can afford to be nearly as "hysterical" as Mr. Richards.

Now everyone scramble to change your story as to why this relic would be nice to own.

It would keep me warm for an hour during winter? Nah, using it for firewood would release too many noxious fumes, some known to the state of California to cause cancer.

I don't care who has owned it - it's a piece of garbage. Knowing the guitar inside and out might have made whoever owned it (Clapton?) play better, but it won't do the same for me. Guitar skills and fame don't rub off onto the guitar and then onto the new owner. Magic doesn't exist, sorry.

No matter how much you peacock your guitar collection and wealth won't make you any more like Keith Richards.

Thank God for that -- I wouldn't let a sonofabitch like that on my property.

Buy legit beaters and fix em to make em even better. Best pair of axes I could ever ask for and I've got lessthan $250 into both of em.

GuitarGuitar have just posted a photo of the relic Fender Custom Shop Michael Landau 1963 Strat and asked for comments about it. Out of the 19 replies received so far only one have been favourable. As I spend most of my time trying NOT to ding my guitars, I was wondering what the consensus was about relic'd instruments?

Do you mean this guitar?

I hate it when someone asked about an item and doesn't post a picture or provide a link...

With that said, I think the first thing I would do with it is repaint it, it look like a pile of cr@p.

I'd be ashamed to take a POFS like that onstage.

I wasn't asking about that guitar in particular. I asked about the consensus on relic'd instruments

I have guitars that are over thirty years old (a couple with nitro finishes) that don't look nearly as bad as the relic'd series.

Admittedly, I haven't ever done the "world tour" thing, but I have played dozens and dozens and dozens of gigs with these axes (one in particular), and they are in decent shape.

I do own two axes that were abused by their previous owners (one severely), and their appearance, while a bit off-setting, doesn't defeat from their sound or playability. I'm not ashamed to take either of them onstage or in studio, but if I'm going to play someplace "nice" (whatever that means), I'm probably not taking either of those instruments.

Having said that, if I found an old guitar with a lot of patina and "character", I wouldn't look down my nose at it--IF it played well ("feel") and IF it sounded good. I would not buy it just because it was old or beat up.

I have mixed emotions about the relic'd and road worn guitars. I've played a couple (Fender and other brands) that sounded pretty good and "felt" ok, but their appearance just kinda fell "flat" in my eyes. If those particular axes had been cheap, I might have considered one, but their price was prohibitive for what they were.

 When you think about it Rollie, whenever you need to buy any white goods in any large retail store, if there's so much as a scratch on it then you either wouldn't accept it or, ask for a discount, another thing that would bother me with the relic's is, when does the relic process stop, would you know for certain that some disgruntled member of staff hasn't inflicted his own part in the ageing process with whatever he had to hand in a moment of rage, and would it bother you if after buying it, you found out that the ding or scratch you thought was carefully placed, was infact a size nine steel toecap boot placed not so carefully, I suppose in the end you have to trust whoever is the seller, and like you said, to each his own.
