GuitarGuitar have just posted a photo of the relic Fender Custom Shop Michael Landau 1963 Strat and asked for comments about it. Out of the 19 replies received so far only one have been favourable. As I spend most of my time trying NOT to ding my guitars, I was wondering what the consensus was about relic'd instruments?

Probably not, I mean not many peeps buy pre wrecked cars do they? In fact I don't know any motor manufacturer who sells knackered new cars :D

The only slight advantage to a relic guitar is you'd be less bothered about dinging it yourself but that's hardly a reason lol. I have a solution to that too, just buy an old guitar in the first place!

Simply another boutique appointment. Like rolled fingerboard edges. A mater of taste. While I've personally seen Custom Shop run offerings that were relics I've liked. I honestly can't ever picture myself ordering one made for me personally and choosing the option. It'll get worn in quick enough on it's own. As I said, I don't think being a relic would stop me from buying one in a shop though. If it speaks to me then it's a possible purchase. It's like distressed jeans or anything else. Simply aesthetic, and one that it supposedly carries over tot he players who like them. There is something about the feel of a broken in guitar. I don't know if it's worth hundred of dollars or not, but some people seem to think so. If it gets them to the place they want to be that's all that matters. Certainly plenty of artists much more successful than anyone on here use and enjoy them. So who's to say? As for trying to keep instruments pristine. While taking good care of your gear and property in general is important. The purpose of a guitar is to play it. Not treat it like your grandmother's china. It's tool. Use it.

Not a big fan of that particular relic job. I don't mind a lighter relic but the heavy relics can be a bit much. My opinion is that if I am playing a guitar with nearly half the paint worn off, it better be because I wore it off playing it myself. That being said, It is a lot less stressful to own one because you don't panic every time you bump it on something.

I think the whole Relic thing is stupid...however, if I picked one up and the guitar played great and had the tone, I might buy it. So far most of the relics I have picked up sounded good, but were total turds in playing feel.

I don't mind them. Some I like some not so much. Like T2 said if it feels good I could care less what it looks like.

I always say relic jobs (or more accurately, pre-ruined guitars) are for people who need to pretend that they've taken their guitars outside of their bedroom. My guitars were in pristine condition when I bought them, they're road worn from being on the road. I never felt the need to pay someone to wreck them for me.

But then I never felt the need to add rust to my car and key the paintwork. Different strokes for different folks.

I look at it like this: A lot of people like tattoos. Some people even cover their bodies in them. If that's what they're into, that's cool--more power to them.

I'm not a big fan of tattoos and I don't have any (though a lot of my friends do). But what I do have is scars--not scarification, mind you, where you pay someone to "modify" your body--but dings and dents and breaks and scabs and deep scratches from years of being on the road, slam pits, skateboarding, surfing, a few fights, etc.

I used to like to say that I could tell you where every scar came from and how I got it. Nowadays, not so much, I just can't remember all that. But what I can say is that each one was earned by me actually doing something and each one has a story (even if I can't remember it). I didn't pay someone else to put it on there so I could look cool.

I think of relic'd guitars the same way.

My Custom Shop 1960 "Time Machine" Strat is such an instrument -- gently aged patina to all the hardware, with mild lacquer checkering of the finish. What the CS labels a "Closet Classic". No dents, no dings, no gouges. It plays and sounds like a dream.

The Fender Custom Shop relics are works of art. As art, one likes some, not others.

The hideous homemade relics we've seen are a whole other thing - a black eye to relics.

I haven't bought a relic. I have enough guitars that have their own "oh oh" or "oh nuts" kind of unintentional relicing.

It's a nay from me, I've heard the reasons why some people like them, and fair play to them Fender seems to be covering all the bases, but again not for me unless they have a "seconds" tag, or a discount, I walk straight past them to the new looking ones
