While he is very talented I've never gotten the appeal. Just a matter of taste. I could go the rest of my life without hearing him and not miss it. However, people dig him and that's cool.

He always wrote and played what he wanted and never bowed to the commercialization pressures, although I'm sure that his production royalties helped him to do that.

It wasn't so much I was laughing at his name, I just got a visual of John Lennon saying that in his typical arrogant manner.
Off to see the Headmaster

Reading through this thread and the way people talk about him I've tried watching the videos to give him another chance but I always get about a minute in and I'm bored. Not to my tastes at all, I can't see what the fuss is about. I don't find his songs memorable and his guitar playing is average. As for production skills, isn't part of the job of a producer to recognise when a song's not good enough to go on an album?

Apologies to all Todd Rundgren fans but I just don't see what's so special about the man.

He is quoted on the walls of the Seminole Hard Rock:

"I don't want to work. I just want to bang on the drum all day."

When he first became popular, I think he, or maybe his band, was known as Runt.

As a big Rundgren fan, I fully admit he has done a bunch of stuff that I don't like. HOWEVER -- the amazing thing with Todd Rundgren is he is a great prog-rock git player in Utopia, and also a great songwriter-bandleader in his regular solo stuff. His "Nearly Human" and "Second Wind" albums are absolutely brilliant. They were recorded live in the studio with an audience, but the audience had to be perfectly quiet because they did not want it to be a "live album". These are two of his best albums, and a great place to start if you are not sure what to get. Awesome stuff!

I like a lot of the work he was involved in, especially Meatloaf's "Bat Out of Hell"..

+1

Grand Funk Railroad's "We're An American Band" wasn't a bad effort either. IMO TR's real forte lies in his production ability.

My introduction to Todd Rundgren was back in the late 60s when a buddy of mine won the "Runt" album on a radio phone-in contest. He hated it and knowing that I was into "weird music"-even back then- he gave it to me.Although he has released some stuff that I wasn't gaga over,I always liked the majority of his music and his production methods on his albums.

Dead?

There was a heated exchange of insults between Rundgren and Lennon in the music press. I think Rundgren just came across as bitter and jealous, Lennon attributed it to Rundgren being upset that he (Lennon) didn't recognise Rundgren when they were at an event together.

Lennon also referred to him as "Turd Runtgreen" which made me laugh out loud.

Yeah I know the all about it.

Yes Nearly Human just blew me away when it came out. Fantastic from beginning to end and has a place in my top 10 cd list. Not to mention he and the band rehearsed every song then recorded it live. Parallel Lines is one the best songs ever written.

Amazing talent on many levels. I just never got into his music all that much...I don't know why.
