There is a very interesting thread going in a surf forum that i frequent that is discussing if the Beach Boys are "Surf" or "American Rock and Roll" or some other music genre? Now, i love surf music but i am not really a purist in that if a song has vocals to me it can still be "surf" while many feel that if a band has vocals it is not surf. I am not repeat NOT saying either belief is right or wrong, i was just curious from the fender faithful do you think that the Beach Boys are surf?

Considering that they started out doing covers of Dick Dale, who might be considered the creator of Surf Rock, combined with the fact that they didn't call them self the Mountain Boys, well, draw your own conclusions.

Actually, I think pigeon-holing can be counter-productive. The Beach Boys were a great, iconic American band IMO. I think of them as 60's R&R. They didn't have that extreme reverb and tremelo like the Ventures did, and perhaps having vocals removes them from surf music in some minds. But then the topics of many of their songs was about the surf. :?: Does it really matter?

it doesn't really matter at all, i only asked here to see what differences (if any) existed between our guitar forum and a more surf-centric forum. For the most part i value the opinions of many members here so thought it might be a fun discussion. Not meant to devolve into a flame thread or anything serious like a fuzz pedal rock quarry.

Exactly! The Beach Boys dabbled a little into that sound, but not much. It was more their song topics that make you think "surf" than their actual sound.

By the way ...

"God Only Knows" by the Beach Boys = one of best rock songs EVERRRRRR

(check it out if you have not hear it -- you can thank me later)

Just saw Dick Dale two weeks ago at the Howlin' Wolf in New Orleans

Image

Even at 77, he played a full 3 hours non-stop ! Had some great stories about blowing up some 50 Fender Amps and taking them into Leo Fender at the old Radio Shop to get them fixed !

Dick commented on the Beach Boys covering some of his songs saying they were the most famous Surf Band to exist!

The opener was the Unnaturals, a tremendous band who brand themselves as New Orleans Surf Rock !

Image

They played an excellent set (w/ vocals) proving that Surf Music is still alive and well !!

cheers!

The Brilliance of Brian Wilson !

I got to meet the Beach Boys twice in my life... 1982 at ChicagoFest, their 20th anniversary tour (had dinner backstage with them before the show)...

And again in 2012 at JazzFest in New Orleans, at their 50th anniversary tour (invited to a Cocktail thing in the Green Room before the show).

Brian and Al Jardine even remembered me from that nite back in '82 on Navy Pier ! Mrs. LMN was thrilled !

cheers!

yes ZB they're surf music which is very American rock and roll :D . Every time I hear Sloop John B. I think of the old Santa Monica Beach before that area got so built up and crowded. Smell that pacific ocean brother. 8)

Labels don't mean much...but I'd have to say the Beach Boys have more in common with the Beatles than the Ventures. In other words, less surf, more rock...

Oldies or pop music, given their song catalog's variety.

Great song yes, but surpassed by 'Good Vibrations'.

Back in the 60's the Beach Boys were known as a surf band. The put on one great concert. I believe their music was surf, Just my opinion.
