I'm so incredibly excited for this upcoming concert! I probably did something really stupid, but I dipped into my savings for next semester and bought VIP tickets! I'm going to have seats in the first ten rows and I'm going to get to see Jeff Beck's soundcheck. I wouldn't ordinarily do something like that, but it's Jeff Beck! And ZZ Top too, of course. I'm ashamed to say that even though they play around here all the time, and that my Dad has even met Billy Gibbons on more than one occasion, I've never actually seen them play live. In fact, ZZ Top was one of the very first bands that could be considered blues that I started listening to. In short, I'm absolutely beside myself over this and September cannot come soon enough! :D

It's amazing what a three man band like ZZ Top can do. It's not like they have awesome choreography or anything either. But they are just awesome. Well worth seeing live.

As for Jeff Beck, he's a brilliant player. He just doesn't have any songs that grip my heart, or get my foot going. It's more showmanship, like Yngwie Malmsteen but toned down for a general audience.

Used to go and watch a radio show for the BBC being recorded in an old picture house, went every week , Saw Mr Beck twice, both times with the Yardbirds (and both times playing his esquire which he'd sanded an arm contour out of )

There used to be a different artist or band on every week, Amen Corner/Bee Gees /The Move etc . The Yardbirds just ambled onstage, plugged in and went straight into "Heartful of soul" , The resident orchestra the NDO (Northern Dance Orchestra ) used to take a break while the groups were on, as they needed no backing unlike the solo singers

Anyway, the lead and rhythm guitarists stayed in their seats at the back of the stage which was tiered so they'd get a pretty good view of the bands from behind
The Yardbirds launched into a second song "I ain't talking" and the lead guitarist was visibly mocking Jeff Beck, because he had a fringe way down over his eyes, desert boots on and looked very plain, not showbiz showy at all
Then Jeff started playing a lick where he was really fast and effortlessly used the volume on the esquire as a swell pedal. The guitarist just sat there, mouth gaping wide open and the rhythm guitarist looked at him and put his hand under the lead guitarists chin and closed his jaw , which was wide open at astonishment

Hi TGS. Neat! Whether you're a Jeff Beck fan or not, to me everything he does falls into place and makes sense when you see him live. Especially in a room that's big enough for his very loud rig to breathe - in the front rows you will really get the force of his sound to perfection!

Do those VIP tickets include a meet-and-greet? Jeff is a painfully shy guy, but like a lot of shy people if you give him something real to talk about he opens up. (Not gear! He's bored to tears with that topic...) And as we know, he's someone who takes talented young women players seriously, which is not universal in the music biz. I hope you can have a good chat!

A truly fine reason to reach into your savings. Enjoy! :)

Cheers - C

I've seen them both and can tell you it's well worth the investment!

Some of the sounds Jeff Beck gets are downright unearthly!

That's an awesome story, Ted! Thanks for sharing.

I wish they did, but unfortunately it's not a meet and greet pass. The VIP ZZ Top tickets were, but I figured that I have a much better chance of running into one of them here in Houston than I do of running into Jeff Beck. However, I do know some people in the know and while I will by no means try to take advantage of anyone or force myself backstage, I will make sure everyone knows I'll be there (just in case). I would really love to get a chance to talk with him!
