I've been to shows in that state. Amazing trip. The most amazing part... you and 5 frat bros in a '61 beetle, talk about close friends LOL

Yea... I never did get the stink outa that car !!

We all took turns at the wheel and sorta rotated through the front passenger seat (the only place you could catch any shut-eye) so you could get some sleep before your 'shift'.

Fortunately, two of them got plane tix from their parents for the return leg, so it was slightly more 'civilized'. All-in-all though, a Road Trip for the Ages !!

When we returned, we had all become Legends in the Fraternity for making such a crazy trip !

cheers!

Chicago has/had many concert venues so a few miles in all directions. Stationed in the UK the ride to London was around 70 miles. I went that distance frequently the 2 years there. Oxford and Coventry were closer, about 12 or 16 miles.

When you look back things like that trip, that's when the phase "good old days" is appropriate. My friends and I would load up in my 66 falcon and head off to Florida from Dayton for spring break like it was no big deal. I wouldn't drive that car to the store now.

In my early 20's I had the worst work schedule, lasting from 11:45PM to noon, 12 hours--all night! I usually had to get up and ready to go to work at 9:30 PM, due the need to make two meals (lunch and dinner) and the 45 mile heavy-traffic/construction route to work. So I generally only slept four or five hours a day and worked all night.

Anyway, at noon-thirty, we would leave work in Irving, Texas and head down to Austin...over 220 miles--with a least a case of beer for each person in the car.

We would go to a bar, usually Antone's, but sometimes others, and see somebody play until they stopped--usually 3:00 AM, sometimes later (one time Buddy Guy played until 4:30 AM!), and then we would drive back home to the little town south of Fort Worth and GO TO RELIGIOUS SERVICES!

Recap thus far:
Awake for 37 hours (after four days of sleep-deprived shift work at night), with a couple of 20-minute catnaps here and there, drinking ungodly amounts of beer, showered and shaved and in a suit...and now we have to sit still (quietly) for two hours.

Several times my mother would approach me and ask where I had been since Friday night, and she usually didn't believe me when we told her we went to Austin to watch Joe Ely or Buddy Guy or Kim Wilson or the Arc Angels or Storyville or whoever.

Immediately after services, we'd go crash for a few hours, wake up and try to play the songs we heard the night before...and generally we'd end up at a bar with an open mic night, playing until 2 or 3 or whenever...and go back to work Tuesday night, in order to start the whole process over.

...and what was worse, sometimes we'd go a step further and head down to San Antonio (140 extra miles, round trip) in order to walk around El Mercado, buy ridiculous clothes and hats (panchos, sombreros and the like), eat enchiladas at La Margarita and drink more beer and tequila. Those times we didn't make it back to Fort Worth on Sunday.

I don't know how we survived...but I still got the pancho to prove it!
