How far would you travel to see a show? I did 12 hours in '75 to see B.B. King. From Dayton Oh. to the Nassau coliseum in Uniondale NY. My buddy lived on Long Island and his dad scored some tickets so me and the '66 Falcon headed east.
What is your longest trip and who did you see?
Later.......Tom

If I had been able to get tickets at the time, I definitely would have flown to Germany for "The Wall – Live in Berlin".

I lived in Europe for a long time, and did a few trips up to 5-600 miles or so to various concerts in various countries. England, Sweden, Netherlands... Also to get stupendously drunk in yet another country. For some reason that was important when young. Ah, youth. May it never come back.

Other than that, trips where you went to hear yourself perform doesn't count?
If they do, 1248 miles to hear myself sing AVC is my record.

We flew from L.A. to Phoenix last year to see E.C. We almost went to the New Orleans Jazz Fest last week but work interfered. Going to see a concert in a different city is a nice excuse for a get away.

October 1994 -- I drove from southern Arizona to El Paso to see the Rolling Stones at UTEP Stadium on their Voodoo Lounge tour. Bryan Adams opened. A buddy of mine at Ft. Bliss bought tickets for him and his wife but she bailed for reasons still unknown. Nosebleed seats but it was still a nice show. Total round-trip mileage, about 630 miles.

In the 1980s/1990s I used to regularly make the 250 mile journey to London to watch Eric Clapton at the Albert Hall.

Not a city I'd want to visit for any other reason.

Wow!

For me it would be with in the local city limits. If I found out the Rolling Stones would be playing their last show in another town . .. maybe I would obtain those tickets though!

Great thread! I am looking forward to reading the other board members response!

My parents used to drive me and my brother around Texas and Louisiana to see our favorite bands play when we were pre-teens. We never really had proper vacations, (my Dad's jobs plus our budget would only allow him weekends off) but that was what we did instead. It's not unusual for me to drive 250-300 miles to someplace like Austin or Dallas to catch a show these days. Any further than that would have to be for something really special. Although I have driven to places like Memphis or Tulsa (12 hours away) to play a show before.

I've been to around 50 countries, and pretty much every big city in the UK, but never have I found a better kebab or bubbly meat pie than in London. I've never had as much of a hangover as in London either (what cockneys call ale is just vile), so I guess that this is a reactionary evolution.

In '79 or '80 I lived in Houston, TX and drove 170 miles for Willie Nelson's annual 4th of July picnic. Booze, bikers, naked chicks, and outlaw country. One of the wildest times I've ever had. The music was awesome and Willie and the boys played for at least 4 hours non-stop.

The only other time I ever drove to another city for a concert was when I was in the Navy stationed in San Diego. A shipmate got tickets to see the Grateful Dead in Long Beach. My ticket was free because I had a car and he didn't. I became a Grateful Dead fan at that show. I was borderline stunned at how well they sounded live.

Cheers,

I travelled over 3,000 miles to see Albert King and then missed the concert! That's not exactly the way that it sounds.Back in 1987 I travelled from St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada to Memphis,Tenn. for a symposium that was connected to my work. One evening several of us got into a couple of cabs and went to the famous Rendezvous Restaurant for their ribs-which the year before were voted the Best In The World at the annual Memphis Bar B Q cook off. After we finished our ribs we decided to check out Peabody Alley which was a venue that was connected with the world famous Peabody Hotel. When we got to the door of the venue and were about to enter we heard the final notes of a song,I asked who was playing and the doorman said that it was Albert King and that had been the final number of his encore.

I was heartbroken beyond words,I had travelled all these miles and hadn't known that one of my most revered guitar heroes was playing there and then finding out that I had missed his show so completely while choosing to stuff my face, just tore me up.We were leaving the next morning so I wouldn't have been able to see him the next night when he played. That was the one and only chance that I ever could've had to see such a beloved guitar giant of mine and I came so close to being able to see him,if I had known that he was playing there,I certainly would've done without the ribs and would've gotten one of my colleagues to get a take-out order for me.That was literally one of the saddest days in my life.

Man, Talk about bad luck. I feel your pain, although not as bad, I went to see Black Sabbath with some friends just because this little known band opening for them was supposed to be good and we were late getting there so we missed them. Sabbath sucked. The little known band... Van Halen. Everybody said they were better than Black Sabbath, including Ozzy.

Thanksgiving Weekend, Sat. Nov. 25, 1972.... A bunch of us who didn't go home for Thanksgiving were sitting around the empty Fraternity House on the U of M campus when, in a severely chemically induced state, one of my Brothers declared that the Greatful Dead would be playing the next day... in San Antonio, TX... !!

It seemed like a good idea at the time, so five of my Brothers and I, along with a case of Old Style and enough goodies to stock a Walgreens  jumped into my 1961 Volkswagen Beetle (w/ 203,000 miles on it) and headed South down I-35. The fact that the show was a sellout and that we didn't actually have tickets didn't deter us in the least.

We travelled all night, 1,252 miles - some of it sideways when we drove right into a blizzard near Clear Lake, IA (R.I.P. Buddy). The car slid off the Interstate and stopped abruptly in a snow bank. Took us 20 min. to dig/push it out, but we arrived at the Civic Center Auditorium exactly 19hrs. and 22 min. after leaving Minneapolis. :D

We parked the car and started walking all around the building looking for scalpers when I see a guy trying to man-handle a Marshall Stack from the back of a truck at the dock. I ran over and caught him just as he was falling. We offered to lend a hand w/ the gear and while we were moving everything told him our story and also asked if he knew where we could get tix. :D

He said he didn't  , but he did have a half-dozen passes backstage and if we helped unloading the rest of the gear, we could have them...

Unloaded the gear, got the passes and went inside, gorging at the craft table as we hadn't eaten anything but chips and beef jerky on the way down. As I was making a plate, a guy asks me if I'd hand him a cup, I turn and it was Jerry Garcia and Mickey Hart !!!

We introduced ourselves and they invited us into the Green Room where we met the rest of the Band and where I had my first taste of Cocaine

Anyway the show was terrific and we kicked around San Antone for a week before heading back North, staying with some folks we'd met in a Bar. 8)

Man... the sh*t you did when you were young

cheers!
