A '54 would be my pick. "Why?", you may ask. Well, I haven't been around that long to have played or seen one in person, but from whatever I've heard; they all seem pretty awesome. I've listened to a few of the '54s on YouTube. They're much clearer than the modern Standard Strats, in my opinion. Maybe it had something to do with the 3-way selector switch back then?

1993 for me. The Strat Plus and Ultra models were the highlight also the Floyd Rose Classic Strat. As far as the lineup was at the time, it was perfect IMO and never the same since.

The best 'deluxe' version Stratocaster was the Strat Plus. The way it was put together to me was spot on. The colour choices etc.., anything after the Strat plus in my opinion has never been as good.

Hi 456 Strings,$250,000 is pretty steep a price for a '54 Strat, they usually run around $80,000 to $100,000,if memory serves me correctly ( I don't have my Vintage Guitar Price Guide handy because I'm far from home) unless they are of some historical significance such as being an early prototype,a rare special order,a very low serial #, or has a celebrity connection. Can you remember if there was anything significant about it?

BTW: The 2004 50th Ann. Strat had pickups that were wound to '54 specs and they were extremely good facsimiles of the actual '54 vintage pickups.I have a 50th Ann. model and it does have a very clean and clear signal that sounds much more powerful than my '65, the word that comes to mind for me that best describes the tone and response is "snappy".I believe they were about $315 or so when new which comes to about $1,500 or so in today's dollars,so considering the inflation rate,Strats are an enormous bargain compared to the original price of the '54s

Google $250,000 Stratocaster, there are a bunch of articles on it. The number was 0100, one of the articles says it was originally sold to an amateur. I'd love to know what he paid for it, where it was sold, etc, etc.
Later.......Tom

Hi 456 Strings-just like I had figured and said in my post that it would have to be either a prototype,of some historical significance or a very early serial number-since the serial number was super low,the $250,000 price tag wouldn't be out of whack.I believe that the original price back in 1954 was just over $200,if I'm not mistaken.

I'd have to recognize the '58 which came into the band about that time and which I acquired four years later and owned for the better part of a quarter century. It's purchase by my still long time friend and bandmate Gary, was inspired by Buddy Holly. It was a fourth generation guitar and the first year of the 3SB finish. That's the one which made me a Strat player for life. Following that, of the five in my stable, my '89 Pewter Clapton is my go to guitar. I consider it a landmark instrument in that it was built early in the history of that Signature series. Can't overlook either, it's prototype forerunner, which I was fortunate to find an example of..an '87 with the early Custom Shop logo, and the pre-production neck and electronics.

I love the 66-71's but to make one thing clear to you guys at Fender 70's strats do NOT have U necks, so please quit doing that!

Other than that, good stuff!

Just one look at that neck pattern board in the factory gives one pause to classify neck carves into a nice neat grouping at all. They're all tagged by model and year of production so there must be some variation on the themes.

It's not only the shape, but truss rod type, overhang, nut width, radius and wood cut that differs, so there are quite a few variations for each shape, even before deciding on fret type and finish.

And, of course, for the handmade necks, no two are going to be exactly the same anyhow. Even machined, there are going to be minor variations because it's wood, which isn't a 100% static and predictable material.

They certainly DO make it look simple at face value, don't they. :?

1987. Why? Subjectively the best thin neck that I ever played. Tuners solid, pickups fantastic, sounded and played great.

This was mine and I stupidly sold it. Also had a 79 25th anniversary and stupidly sold it because the finish cracked. Got a 79 Antigua and stupidly sold it. Pictured here in 86.

Got a 2010 custom shop Paul Waller and a 2013 white. Won't get stupid again (sounds like the making of a Who song).
