I am currently using Gibson Pump Polish to clean and polish everything including neck, fingerboard, and body of my AVRI 69 Thinline Tele. The bottle says its safe to use as both a cleaner/polish and it is safe for nitro. It does a great job but I'm still unclear if it is safe to use on this Tele, specifically the neck and fingerboard which I clean frequently (sweat and whiskey)

If the Gibson stuff is safe to use on the entire guitar, great. If not please let me know what you recommend.

Thanks!

It should be perfectly safe - Gibson branded polishes are pretty good and non-damaging.

If you have a rosewood fingerboard, or a maple fingerboard where the lacquer has worn off so you're down to the wood, you should not use it on the fingerboard, though.
For rosewood, use fretboard oil (often called "lemon oil", although it isn't - real lemon oil would ruin it).
For maple that's down to the wood, you can use naptha for cleaning, but it won't remove any stains already going into the wood.

probably the best stuff available at the moment is Virtuoso Cleaner and Polish.

Check it out when your Gibby pump is empty.

This is worth a mention too, for the steel wool devotees ...

Top tip- get some jeweller's rouge. Amazing for getting swirls and marks out.

Soooooo its that time of the month....time to polish and clean my Tele!

Is the Gibson Pump Polish safe to use on my AVRI 69' Tele's FINGERBOARD and on the back of the NECK?

I am confused about cleaning the FINGERBOARD and if using polish, or any cleaner, is safe for the FINGERBOARD. Some people say to clean fingerboard, some say not to...

Since my maple fingerboard is sealed, and seems to be the same exact finish as the neck, is there any difference when cleaning the two? With a sealed neck and fingerboard, isn't the finish identical on both?

thanks!

For a maple fingerboard, you can use pretty much anything you like except fingerboard conditioner, which is a mineral oil (usually with lemon scent) that will attack some lacquer finishes. Exception: If the maple board lacquer is worn through, you don't want to get polish on those parts.
For a rosewood/"rosewood"/ebony fingerboard, you want to use the oil, liberally.

The anti-steel wool ranting man is correct. He left out how the metal dust gets attracted to the pickups, works their way into the pickup windings where they start breaking down the hair thin windings. Big trouble. I don't want steel wool anywhere near my instruments unless the pickups are taped up first, then the entire instrument thoroughly air blown with high pressure, then put more tape over the original tape and remove both layers at once. Best not to use it at all but lots of people do. Then these people wonder why their pickups croak weeks later. Metal bits got into the windings and that is what killed the pickup! It takes a few weeks and some vibrations and the pickup winding gets broken.

Renaissance Wax is universally safe on wood, metal, everything but fabric and food in fact. Just use it in a well ventilated area. This is great stuff used on Stradivarius violins and other fine instruments by restoration experts and museums even it on old master oil paintings! Developed originally by the Royal Museum restoration and preservation staff, one 200 ml jar lasts a typical guitar owner several years, but that would be about 2 months for someone with like 40 instruments who decides to treat them all to it monthly. It is safe for wood, chrome covers, bridges, plastic, celluloid, any fingerboard material and even peghead decals. It for sure is safe on poly and nitro. There is nothing on any Fender guitar it will hurt. You can even clean leather guitar straps with it! Most guitarists never heard of it, but it is the best stuff to use for a one step clean and protect product.

I love lemon oil a lot. I use it as a cleaner, not really as a conditioner. I've got the Dunlop 65 lemon oil (bought as a gift for me). A lot of people say you shouldn't use it for maple fingerboards, but here's what I got from Gibson when I asked them the guestion:
Quote:
You can apply the Dunlop fretboard conditioner to a baked maple fingerboard without a problem. It is however not really an adequate product because the fretboard conditioner is to nourish a rosewood fingerboard which will typically have a tendency of drying out over time. The conditioner fills pores, feeds the wood and makes it juicy again. Such treatment is however not needed with a baked maple fingerboard because that does not have the pores that are charatcteristic for Rosweood.

I realize the Dunlop lemon oil is meant as a conditioner, but I found it cleans the necks very effectively so I use it as a cleaner anyway - both on my Strat (maple fingerboard) and on my Les Paul (baked maple fingerboard).

I use Fender cleaner, polisher and swirl/haze remover on both of the guitars (the Strat has a Nitro finish). Something similar to this:

Although what I have is close to 10 years old now and I can't find it anywhere on Fender's website  I'm guessing it's pretty much the same, bar a new packaging and the added fretboard cleaner.

I just want to say that this Gibson cleaner/polish has been the best for my AVRI Tele, which I think has a nitro finish...the description says "glass lacquer" does that mean nitro?

It's good to be concerned about the correct Polish/Cleaner for your guitar.

But, it's better to be concerned with over-Polishing/Cleaning it too. especially for a Lacquer finish.

You seem to indicate monthly cleaning, that's waay too much !

Wipe the guitar down after each use with just a Microfiber cloth. You can also get a small spray bottle with some Distilled Water in it (Distilled Water won't leave a Mineral Buildup or streaks). Give the guitar a VERY light spritz of water and then lightly wipe it dry w/ the MF cloth. The cloth should come away merely damp not wet. If it's wet, you're spraying too much water.

You shouldn't have to Polish/Clean it except once or twice a year, if that...

It's a guitar afterall, not a rare Ferrari at the Pebble Beach Concours !

cheers!

I don't clean/polish the whole guitar every time I play...but at least once a month if I am touring playing a few times a week. (when I play I get really sweaty and spill whiskey all over everything, it just happens)

BUT I wipe down the back of the neck after every gig (a few times a week) and usually have to use the polish/cleaner to get that "back to new" smoothness. I find that this Gibson pump/polish works like a dream on the back of the lacquer neck back, it never leaves a sticky residue like some cleaners i have tried.

On the advice of using water...I have tried using the moisture from my breath and or a bit of water but it never feels as smooth as when I use the Gibson stuff...
