We may start seeing a lot of these on ebay. Possibly parted out.

My thoughts as well. No one is actually getting what they want.

Good thing I have big hands, so I can grab some cheap fat necks.

Yup. I'll build a throne of 58 P necks. 8) Hell, a place like the Stratosphere will be hoppin'. Buy the 58 P neck, the pickups, bridge and buttons. Then just buy a vintage tone circuit and warmoth body in a nitro custom color. Easy peasy.

If I was interested in Fender AVS guitars and got custom color options on multiple models every year then I'd probably agree. However, for the past 32 years the production run AVS 50's P basses have come in Burst, Blonde and now Black... yay. Going the Warmoth route is a hell of a lot cheaper than paying the custom shop an extra 3 grand for a custom color 58 P bass. Guitarists get spoiled by Fender. Not saying that's a bad thing, but outside of the early Tele models you can pull up the AVS models and get at least one custom color option on each. The fact that the 63 P got 4 colors this year was a HUGE step in the right direction, but the 50's P always get the short end of the stick. Why not a Shell Pink, Fiesta Red, CAR, or Surf Green?

No, I mean, I just don't see it as worth it. I don't see the value in it.

I could get a legit Fender neck for less most of the time.

I see what you mean.

I guess the "too expensive" is a double edged sword for both companies.

Like I said, pay 1700 bucks for a 58 P bass in a downgraded finish with no vintage case candy and covers when I can pay 2k for the real deal? (I'm going to send an email on the wiring harness today, I think) When you're spending that kind of money what's the extra 300? Especially when you can pick up a demo model for cheaper than the ADE option. What good is the custom color if it's in poly? I hope this this works out for the people who want it. Some of it is a real headscratcher, though.

I guess with the upcharge for a nitro body that you'd pay, you'd be in AVRI territory anyway. Doing that would cannibalise that range and if history is anything to go by, FMIC would rather you pay through the nose to get what you want through the customshop rather than give you the cheaper alternative. Doing this has really put them in competition with themselves.. :?

Why they do this, I don't know. if they did things right the first time, the range would be smaller and they would have products loyal consumers would actually want to buy.

Exactly. I'm not even talking Custom Shop style custom colors where you can order anything under the sun. I'm talking an ADE feature where you order actual AVS models with part swaps and bodies in the nitro custom colors used on the AVS production line. You start out with the base price for the model and then pay the upcharge for the custom color. Just like in the old days. I'd pay 2300 for an AVS P with say the 58 neck, 63 Pups and a body in nitro Surf Green or Shell Pink with choice of vintage style guards. However, There's no way in hell I'd pay 1700 for an imitation with a downgraded poly finish and possibly the plastic coated modern wiring harness. What's the point? While I'll end up getting a Custom Shop bass I'm not going to waste my money on ordering a production run model in a custom color for 5 or 6 grand. I'll be ordering a 55 P since there's no AVS single coil option.
