I'm going on 12 more years than you and cut my teeth on DooWop, Rock-a-billy, and early Rock'n Roll. The only thing I miss about 1958 and forward musically, is not having been able to afford the gear then that's sitting in my office presently. I sure would have appreciated having a Fender VI back then. The best I did was to have purchased used, and with hard earned bucks, my bandmate's '58 Strat and his Concert amp. That was 1962, when he swapped out for the new Jaguar and the Showman. That Strat, unfortunately, is history, the result of an encounter between it and CBS-Fender. The amp, a bad decision, on my part, to trade.

I find as I get older (44 last month) that I am more musically adventurous (I'll give everything two spins before casting judgement) but I am less tolerant of crap...I've been trying to break out if the repetitious listening patterns I've been in for the last few years, but 90% of the new "mainstream" stuff just doesn't do it for me. I would rather go see local unknowns that may or may not be worth a crap than a "great new (national touring) act"...thus, I've seen some oddball acts lately--a jazz trio led by a Jewish American Princess who played piano and accordion; a quartet of Americana musicians led by a somewhat large woman with an even larger voice (they added a fifth member for a while--a classically trained cellist...it worked!)...my cousin Lincoln Durham's one-man-band thing...even my band is looking to do something different, somewhere between the Black Keys and a Stax/Volt duo...
All of which are kinda unique and offbeat, to varying degrees. (Linc's looking like something that crawled out from under a Edgar Allen Poe novelette lately...)

The second thing I have noticed is the lowered desire to acquire more guitars. I used to want five of everything, but I am noticing that the "latest and greatest" thing I try just doesn't touch me like the old MIM Tele I already have...I'm not even getting as much pleasure out of my other guitars as I am this one simple axe. Maybe I've finally found "the One" or maybe it's just lack of time and energy to invest in playing, but I've had visions of selling all my stuff and keeping one acoustic, the Tele and the resonator...I've already sold several stompboxes that I used to hoard with the idea of making a second pedalboard.

Probably not gonna happen...and if it does, I hope I don't regret it later. I'm just tired of seeing those cases collect dust.

Or maybe I'm just tired, period.

SA, I feel ya man. We're the same age. I haven't been in a band for the past couple of years. Went back to my day job. But I still find myself buying gear as if I'll be back in the game again. I have a bit too much these days. But I'm getting ready to scale down soon. Really, the H&K and Heidkamp can do pretty much everything I need in a studio. But I'll be damned if I'm lugging those amps to shows. I like my back too much. So I'll keep around the JC for when the opportunity comes around again. Guitars will be much harder for me.

I've been stepping outside the box musically myself for a while now. That's how I ended up in a reggae band. You should check some out some day. Stranger, Tribal Seeds, Fortunate Youth, SOJA. Fun stuff to listen to. I've been listening to Polish music for the past month. I can't understand a word of it, but I can listen to it for hours. I don't think I'll ever stop trying to expand my musical interests. Life's too short and there's a lot of good stuff out there. Even stuff beyond our borders that we never hear about over here.

I honestly don't feel old at all. I went to see Asking Alexandria and had a killer time. Good band, fun band to hang with. We just drank and talked about all kinds of crazy stuff after the show. A lot of laughs, good times.

While I enjoy listening to reggae live and even sat in with a reggae band (playing harmonica as if I were a horn section), I don't know if I would want to do that regularly.
I'm moving in a more Americana/Texicana direction lately, but with the heaviness of a Dan Auerbach or Jack White.

The Screamin' Armadillos drummer and I (currently the only active members of the band) are looking to play a few shows as a duo; he playing a kick drum and rhythm guitar, me playing guitar/slide guitar/harp and vocals. We're looking to play more covers than usual, albeit somewhat obscure ones.

I'm not tired of playing originals, I'm just tired of not playing.

I guess I'm old too. 46 at the end of this month.
I just don't like big venues any more. Lots of reasons. I can't stand crowds anymore. Costs too much to park, get a cool shirt, drink a beer etc. You print your own tickets at home. ( no stub to collect). And the best reason. I went to a local large venue to see a show. Parked at the back to beat the traffic. Walked a half mile to get in and security wouldn't let me in because of the chain on my wallet. Well, I hiked back missing half of the first set and guess what? It seemed every dude in every band had a chain on his wallet. Trust me, these guys looked a lot scarier than me. Just sayin.
I'll just stay home and watch the big names on my own TV. There may or may not be that "funny smell" lingering about the room.

As a geezer myself (55) I have noticed that people today have the exact opposite tendency as they did back in the day with regard to concert attendance. For the past 20 years or more I have noticed people will acquire pretty much any recording they can find but the rarely attend concerts unless they really, really love an act. I started noticing this even before concert prices began to get out of control. When I was young we attended every concert that came to town. Period. If we liked them then we would buy the recording so we could sort of re-live the experience. I had almost as many ticket stubs as albums.

I think the main difference is the rising prices of concerts. Back when, the price for an album and to attend a concert were often in the same range. Now it's common to see $60 for an average non-star concert, but in reality you have to pay $100 or more because ticket sharks with high speed software have bought all the tickets. If you go with your s.o., that's $200. Plus $20 parking. Plus $20 for two beverages. You can buy a lot of album downloads for that.

That was never the case in my experience. Concerts have always cost significantly more than albums, at least where I lived. I'd say by a factor of maybe 3 to 5. When I was a kid a record cost about $4 or $5 and a concert cost anywhere from $12 to $25 depending on the artist. Those numbers may seem close to us now but back then they were worlds apart at a time when the minimum wage was about 60₵/hr. Small time regional bands could be seen for about $8 to $10. Now it's a factor of about 15 and sometimes more depending on the artist but like I said, I started noticing this trend long before the price of concerts started getting out of hand. I started noticing it in the late 80s and early 90s when the factor was still around 3 to 5.

I have more or less stopped going to arena concerts due to the ridiculous cost of tickets. Would I like to see Paul McCartney on tour? Sure, but not at a cost over $200 a ticket (and probably for bad seats). I'd frankly rather spend the money (if I have it) on gear.

There are still a lot of good, not insanely-priced shows by artists new and old at smaller-sized venues. Last month, my sister and I went to see St. Vincent (a phenomenal guitarist) in Buffalo and tickets at the box office were a mere $23 apiece. Next month, my dad is going to see Willie Nelson and Allison Krauss an his tickets were around $60 each.

I feel your pain phreddy, I just turned 60 last month. My wife said not to worry 60 is the new 50, I said, baby, there ain't nothin' new about 60.
I think I would feel much older were it not for music. When I play older stuff it reminds those days, fun times. When I work on current projects, the thought process keeps my mind working and sharp. I always said, back in the day, who needs more than 4 strings. More recently I've been messing with a 6 string bass and while it not exactly in my wheel house, it is new and requires a different thought process. That being said when I get to play my old jazz through my b-15 something just feels right.

I live in n.w. ohio- Toledo to be exact.

I agree with you on music. I just love playing and listening to the older stuff. I have a friend who calls me when his 60's band needs a rhythm player. the audience is mostly the same age as we are. they are a little more forgiving, and we have fun playing the stuff we grew up on. only one problem- that means the groupies are our age too

I saw Cream in 1968 for $6.50, which included a chance meeting with the group's members outside the auditorium after the event. By contrast, I think I paid $3.99 at Tower Records for the Disraeli Gears LP.

Tower Records! In L.A., before Tower bought them out, the big record chain was called Licorice Pizza. Not too hard to figure out what was going on when they came up with that name, I guess. Damn, now I'm feeling really old.
