I think I am officially old at age 60! here's why...

I started playing guitar in 1960. I went to a few of those "road shows" - the kind shown in "that thing you do". since then have been to concerts from Steppenwolf in 68 to led zep in 77 and many more. I used to love getting there early and checking out the backline-the big stacks of marshalls, the crudely constructed plywood p.a. systems, the non air-conditioned venues, and the smell of some funny substance in the air  no bs-just good music 8)

that's probably why I still listen to the same music these days. I don't want to see dancers and dj's along with the band. when do play out, I have 1 guitar, a small amp, and a few effects. the rawness of the music comes thru-no gimmicks.

so tell me-any old-timers like me miss the good old days?

I don't think it's a matter of age. It's a matter of taste. I use a P bass strung with flats, no effects and I'm trying to get back to pure tube tone from my hybrid. I'll only be turning 40 this year. I think you've just got taste in music that doesn't go along with a lot of the modern trappings. Nothing at all wrong with that.

I see you're from Ohio and saw Steppenwolf in '68. I have a funny story, you may have been there. I saw Steppenwolf in downtown Cleveland in '68 at an old burlesque theater with no sound system. They were playing with Arlo Guthrie. It happened to be Arlo's birthday and he was going to be the second act. Steppenwolf came on and they sounded like sheet! That old hall and their raw amps just didn't mix. They played three songs and when they got no applause, they flipped off the audience and walked off stage. After a long intermission, where I'm sure Arlo was wondering what he would be walking into, he came out. He and his accoustic sounded great and he got standing ovations. I'll never forget getting flipped off by Steppenwolf! :D
As far as you're feeling old. I tend to embrace technology. But every now and then I get overwhelmed by things I started and long for a simpler answer. There's nothing wrong with simple, unless it causes you to flip off your audiance I guess.

Do I miss the old days? For sure. I cant relate to music today.
Beyond that, as an American, I just dont know who we are anymore.
It's great that you started playing so long ago, phreddy, I'll be dead before I get where I want to be musically.

On the plus side: I'm not a product of my environment, like I was back in the day.
I stand up for myself, like I often failed to do, back in the day.
And, I care a lot less about what people think. Low self-worth is our nation's number one killer :)

One look at my modest collection of vintage Fender gear should make my position abundantly clear......

I find as I get older (44 last month) that I am more musically adventurous (I'll give everything two spins before casting judgement) but I am less tolerant of crap...I've been trying to break out if the repetitious listening patterns I've been in for the last few years, but 90% of the new "mainstream" stuff just doesn't do it for me. I would rather go see local unknowns that may or may not be worth a crap than a "great new (national touring) act"...thus, I've seen some oddball acts lately--a jazz trio led by a Jewish American Princess who played piano and accordion; a quartet of Americana musicians led by a somewhat large woman with an even larger voice (they added a fifth member for a while--a classically trained cellist...it worked!)...my cousin Lincoln Durham's one-man-band thing...even my band is looking to do something different, somewhere between the Black Keys and a Stax/Volt duo...
All of which are kinda unique and offbeat, to varying degrees. (Linc's looking like something that crawled out from under a Edgar Allen Poe novelette lately...)

The second thing I have noticed is the lowered desire to acquire more guitars. I used to want five of everything, but I am noticing that the "latest and greatest" thing I try just doesn't touch me like the old MIM Tele I already have...I'm not even getting as much pleasure out of my other guitars as I am this one simple axe. Maybe I've finally found "the One" or maybe it's just lack of time and energy to invest in playing, but I've had visions of selling all my stuff and keeping one acoustic, the Tele and the resonator...I've already sold several stompboxes that I used to hoard with the idea of making a second pedalboard.

Probably not gonna happen...and if it does, I hope I don't regret it later. I'm just tired of seeing those cases collect dust.

Or maybe I'm just tired, period.

Happy Birthday phreddybee! At 64 it is a sure bet that I am old lol. Steppenwolf was my first concert at the Electric Theater (Kinetic Playground) in Chicago spring of 1968. The warm up act was The Litter, unique because their backline was all Peavey. John Kay wore a white ruffled shirt (pirate shirt} and played a Gibson 339 or it looked like one of those. Born To Be Wild, Sookie Sookie and The Pusher are songs that were etched on my brain that night. Yes I miss those good old days of rock and roll. I try listening to new music all of the time and keep hearing my old music rehashed, most of the time not for the better unfortunately for today's generations, but I'm still hoping because some new bands/musicians (ie: Rival Sons, Rebecca Laird and precious few others) can rock like my old favorites. Enjoy your ancientness, it took a long time and much experience to get here. 8)

Memorable indeed, given that Born to be Wild did not come out on record until later that year - they must have given a preview (not unheard of in those days, when the record companies didn't hold the leash). I wish I had been there! :)

Wearing out the needle on the phonograph by lifting it up and back 500 times to learn a lead part correctly. I also recall getting the belt for taking the speakers out of the console for my make-shift one-channel tube PA head with screw-speaker-connection guitar amp. (Like they weren't going to notice) Didn't have a clue what alnico meant back then and for sure didn't care about imp. match.

Ya, I miss that, really. Life was much more simple and s-l-o-w-e-r.

Phreddy, go see The Black Crowes next time they tour your area. You'll feel right at home.

SA, I feel ya man. We're the same age. I haven't been in a band for the past couple of years. Went back to my day job. But I still find myself buying gear as if I'll be back in the game again. I have a bit too much these days. But I'm getting ready to scale down soon. Really, the H&K and Heidkamp can do pretty much everything I need in a studio. But I'll be damned if I'm lugging those amps to shows. I like my back too much. So I'll keep around the JC for when the opportunity comes around again. Guitars will be much harder for me.

I've been stepping outside the box musically myself for a while now. That's how I ended up in a reggae band. You should check some out some day. Stranger, Tribal Seeds, Fortunate Youth, SOJA. Fun stuff to listen to. I've been listening to Polish music for the past month. I can't understand a word of it, but I can listen to it for hours. I don't think I'll ever stop trying to expand my musical interests. Life's too short and there's a lot of good stuff out there. Even stuff beyond our borders that we never hear about over here.

I honestly don't feel old at all. I went to see Asking Alexandria and had a killer time. Good band, fun band to hang with. We just drank and talked about all kinds of crazy stuff after the show. A lot of laughs, good times.

For me the days of Cream, Hendrix, and Mountain in concert never left my music listening through out the years.
