I do not have any details yet, but I just found out from a friend in GA that Atlanta Rhythm Section bassist Paul Goddard passed away yesterday April 29th. A.R.S. was formed from members of two other Atlanta area acts known as the Classics IV and the Candymen. The original ARS members began playing together in 1970 as the house band for the newly opened Studio One in Doraville, a suburb of Atlanta, GA. ARS released at least 16 albums counting greatest hit compilations and live albums. Their most successful singles included "Doraville," "I'm Not Gonna Let It Bother Me Tonight," "Champagne Jam," "So Into You," "Imaginary Lover," "Angel," "Do It Or Die," "Neon Nites", and a pretty successful cover version of the previous Classics IV hit "Spooky."

While never a monster act they were well regarded, especially among players. ARS influenced a number of artists, notably Travis Tritt, who covered ARS songs, "Back Up Against the Wall" and "Homesick." The group Shudder to Think also covered "So Into You."

After being the only bassist from 1970 till 1983 for ARS, Mr. Goddard became a school teacher in Atlanta and a string of other players played bass for ARS until 2011 when Mr. Goddard returned to the band.

Paul Goddard is the fourth ARS band member to have died. The others are: original drummer Robert Nix (2012; complications from surgery); vocalist Ronnie Hammond (2011; heart attack), drummer R.J. Vealey (1999, heart attack).

Tragic! I had met Paul Goddard briefly in a music store in Doraville back in 1977, just after the band's "Red Tape" album was released (yes, one of the few vinyl LP's I still own and arguably their best effort). He was as nice a fellow as I've ever met, a real gentleman.

A selection of tasty ARS tunes......

Go with God, Paul......I expect you'll be hooking up with Rory, Jimi, or SRV in short order.

Great selections, I'll just add this one because I remember playing it until the tape wore out:

RIP

I have been collecting the ARS albums. Just yesterday I bought their "The Boys From Doraville" album. Lots of great stuff from him and that band.

RIP . . . So sad. My wife grew up in Doraville, Georgia . .. Where they formed. A sad loss for music indeed.

Yes, RIP Paul Goddard.

The Atlanta Rhythm Section was a great group. My favorites were "Spooky" and "So In To You". The band I'm currently in does a cover of "Spooky".

Wow! I'm late seeing this (as usual) but I really hate to hear this....:( A drummer friend of mine got to see them a few years ago when they performed in Hiawassee, GA at the Anderson Music Hall. Tickets were very cheap. If I'd known in time, I would've went because I had never seen them live but, via Travis Tritt's guitarist, Wendell Cox, I knew who they were because he was heavily influenced by them (I met Wendell at the Cherokee NC Harrah's casino YEARS ago when he had some off-time and was sitting in with a local band and we talked for a little while and I was able to get him to sign part of a guitar string packet).

Rest in peace, Mr. Goddard. :(
