Hey all!
A couple months ago I posted a topic about potentially entering a contest to get a scholarship to a recording arts school. Well... I decided to give it a shot!
Contestants were given 3 songs to pick from, it was then our job to mix these songs to the best of our abilities. The songs were: New Orleans is Sinking - The Tragically Hip, Boys with Girlfriends - Kate Morgan, and Tattoo (Rudebwoy) - Kardinal Offishall
I ended up choosing the Kate Morgan song because ideas were running through my head as soon as I heard the track. Not really my favourite style, but I guess it just inspired me the most.

I would love it if you guys would give it a listen, and give me some feedback. I'm aware that it's not of professional quality, and I don't really expect to win the scholarship, but taking part in this contest has definitely taught me a lot. Please give me some honest feedback, as I'm still trying to learn.
(link is gone, contest is closed)

If you like it, feel free to hit the little heart underneath to vote for me.

By the way, this is my first time ever attempting to mix a song, so I know that I have some work to do.

Thanks!

Nice mix, I voted for you. :D

Some constructive criticism:

Did you put on a filter or something at 2:27? The vocal track seems to drop out a little ... and then it comes back at 2:36. I like the idea (if that's what I'm hearing) but the vocal is a little hard to hear at that part.

I think the drums could sit back in the mix a little. That's entirely a matter of taste. It seems like the cymbals in particular are a little out front and harsh.

Could probably raise the bass in the mix, but again that's a matter of taste. The recording has a cool 'coffee-shop act' vibe as it is. Maybe leaving the bass a little low makes sense.

I really like how you mixed the guitars and vocals, good job.

Overall it has a nice feel. The snare is compressed a little too much for me, but it works for this style of song.
I think your biggest problem is it sounds like the lead vocal was peaking and getting pretty raspy at times. Especially at the beginning of the song. I think there's a chance that some judges won't listen past 30 seconds because of that.

At 2:27 the vocal gets turned down substantially in the right ear (if listening with headphones), until about 2:32. Then from 2:32-2:36 it switches sides, where you will mostly hear it out of the right ear.
I actually completely agree about the drums. Due to my lack of knowledge on how to get the results I wanted, I had to settle for what you hear. The cymbals are ridiculously loud on all of the recordings, and it was tough to try and find a volume where everything worked.
As for the bass, I also agree. I feel like it lost some of the bass when I altered it into mp3 format. From what I can tell (and it may be entirely in my head) the bass sounds far better when listening to it in Logic in the original format. That being said, I think it turned out decent either way.

Thanks for taking the time to listen!
After giving it another listen, I fully understand where you're coming from when you mention the vocals peaking. That's something I'll definitely look out for in the future.

Thanks to everybody for taking the time to check it out!
