Hi,

So I recently bought an American Special Strat and LOVE how it plays - but the Texan Special pickups that came with it are just not my style. I'm looking for pickups with smooth, fat, bassy tones, with a bit of bite on the bridge pickup, because at the moment, the Texan's are providing me with a very twangy, bright sound that really just isn't for me.

I've been looking at Seymour Duncans, but it would be great to hear from those with first hand experience, as the SD website is ultimately trying to make a sale rather than give me all the facts.

I'm looking for a John Squire (The Stone Roses)/John Fruiscante (The Red Hot Chili Peppers)/John Mayer/Hendrix tone (..Aren't we all..) and I just can't make up my mind on what to do.

If anyone could help me out that would be great!

Fat '50s. No excuses, no alibis, just beefy ballsy tone.

Asking for pickup recommendations then disagreeing with what people tell you, that's a great way to seek advice.

You'll hear differing opinions about EVERY pickup and guitar, why not watch a few youtube clips and decide what YOU like the sound of?

you do this type of thing a lot. I notice new members take a little while to settle in and if you keep criticizing so quickly they are going to see 'us' as judgmental. 'we' are not that. after a time if someone remains unpleasant then your most clever and witty rebuffs can be amusingly entertaining. everyone should get a chance or three or four to show their best side. IMHO YMMV (to quote my favorite Martian).

Nobody's opinion on this forum is worth more than the Charmin required to wipe it off and flush it away. The OP is free to take what's offered under advisement, ignore it, or whatever seems to be the most beneficial for his particular plight. And if he chooses to cop and attitude, that's fine as well. WGAS? He'll find his way......one way or the other.

It's a valid point and yes, I did consider deleting that post immediately. I am frequently abrasive and direct in my posting and when I read it back I frequently either delete my reply or edit it to tone down my rhetoric.

My point here is that the OP has come asking for advice without giving much idea of what he/she wants, then rebuffed advice that was given by two people. While I'm not suggesting anyone should run out and buy pickups on the strength of two users recommending them here, I was amused that someone would sign up to post here, ask experienced players for advice then immediately dismiss it out of hand when it is offered.

The OP merely said he'd heard mixed reviews. He didn't say the pickups or the opinions were crap. It seemed like he was carrying a conversation.

Statements on the internet, stripped of the non-verbal aspects of conversation, often appear harsher or less humorous than the poster intended them. Typing with a smirk on one's face doesn't always translate to a post that puts a smirk on the faces of the readers. In short, not everyone can pick up the subtleties that the poster had hoped would be obvious or at least implied.

This applies to my posts as well as the posts I respond to in a way that may seem inappropriate at times. Anyone can misconstrue the tone of a post, I certainly do and others do it with me. That's one of the perils of internet discussions, always has been.

Even more effective than an updated signature would be to cut the unnecessary sarcasm altogether.

Taking into account that Youtube demos are compressed & not always reflective of how a rig sounds in-person, I'd say the Fat 50's (as used here), do a pretty nice job of the Hendrix thing. A nice Fender amp doesn't hurt, either.

There's plenty that gets posted here that I strongly object to. I either report it or I let it ride. Imagine that.

Thanks for the response GF. I get your idea because you've been a positive/helpful contributor for some time here. Your updated sig is sufficiently cheeky to bring a welcomed smile. Deleting your post? H3LL no! I like to edit mine too though. Glad that you didn't get me wrong, of all the imperfect people I hold the most 1st place prizes lol.

Hey, I wasn't criticising OR dismissing the suggestion! If the guys likes the pickups, then great, I was just saying that I HAVE heard mixed reviews, and I was only wondering what his response to that was.. I'm only 16, I've been playing most of my life and the truth is, I don't have the money to invest in something I'm unsure about. If my agenda was to act superior to those on this forum and to "dismiss advice out of hand" then there would be no point in my being here, and I wouldn't bother asking for your advice in the first place man.. I'm sorry if i've offended anyone or seemed arrogant, that was not my intention.
