For 15 + years I played a Fender Ultimate Chorus solid state amp. The clean sounds great and I always thought the drive did too. After playing my Traynor YCV40WR, i realize it does not sound as good as I thought it did. An overdrive pedal sounds better than the amps distortion channel. I'll never get rid of it. I'll keep it as a back up. Both amps weigh the same, but the fender is a 2x12.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Ever notice when this kind of discussion comes up people find themselves defending SS to some degree. It's rarely the other way around.

It also brings up as a side discussion the "plugin" craze for recording. And don't forget the newfound iPad craze floating around for live setups. I honestly have no desire to use iPad downloaded pedal use. I just can't see that as being an option for me.

I have to speak for SS to some degree myself though. My live rig was tubeless and I did fine with it. Got compliments on my sound many nights.

No disrespect to you intended but one night I got mugged into doing a gig I really didn't want to do. For a laugh I played most of my solos a semitone off key. People still complimented me on my playing. Since then I never paid any attention to drunk peoples' comments on my sound or playing.

I currently have 1 amp- a peavey bandit 112 silver stripe solid state. it is a great amp, but I will never say that it is better than a tube amp.

in a few weeks I will be purchasing a new (or maybe used) tube amp. after playing some low powered (30 watt or so) tube amps, I have decided that it's time to get back to tubes. may be fender or mesa, just don't know yet. still have to try out more. that is why i'll be heading to sweetwater gearfest in june.

Ibanez Tube Screamer. In the low watt market, it's the best bang for the buck imo. $249 shipped on ebay.

All my amps are tube type and I love em, but when it comes to tires I gotta go tubeless. Oh wait that's another discussion.

Ibanez Tube Screamer???

I don't get it, isn't that a solid state overdrive pedal? Not a 30 Watt tube amp?

Massively confused here.

EDIT: ok, now I google it I find there's a Tube Screamer AMP which is 15 Watts. Would it kill them to think up a new name?

Going by their previous naming convention, I'd suggest the Ibanez Transistor Screamer.

No disrespect to you intended, but that can have two possible causes, not just one.

You would be assuming I'm only talking about drunken patrons. We had a lot of other musicians, sound guys, engineers, producers, you name it, that would regularly come to our shows. One year, the biggest local city entertainment rag here in Vegas voted us the best live band in Vegas.

And like I said, I mostly used a Roland JC. There are a lot of guitar players who love the sound of a JC. Myself included obviously. If you know how to use your pedals right, you can do a lot with a JC. It takes pedals very well right through the front end. I never used the loop.
By replacing the speaker in a JC, you can fool people into thinking its a tube amp. It's that good of a clean channel. You just have to toss the OEM speaker for something better.

I always got compliments from the sound guys at House Of Blues, Hard Rock, The Rio, Cannery, The Mirage. We played those places regularly. Believe me, I know all too well about drunken patrons, friends and family compliments. But you develop a professional relationship with the sound guys that's on a different level. They'll tell you if something sounds bad or if you're boosting too much or if you need to use different settings. They mostly could give a $@!& about paying compliments to people. So when they do, and they want to have a rig talk about what you're using with a fascination about it rather than with a sour tone, and they compliment you on what you've created, it's a far difference than a fan who pays you a compliment.

I'm not saying all of this to pat myself on the back or anything. But I do want to make a point that if you think I don't know the difference between compliments from people who are doing so in a professional manner and a drunk person who knows nothing about music gear, then you're not giving me enough credit.

For the record, I appreciate all compliments no matter who they come from. Whether it's on a professional level or coming from an average person, it's all positive, and I don't dismiss it.

Here, I'm not typing this out again but it's becoming relevant in this thread too.

I'm not offended. I don't think you're a bad guy. We're cool.

All-tube amplification combined with a genuine Celestion speaker provides timeless tone
This fully loaded 30-watt tube amp gives you tons of control over your sound

I don't think you can find one of these on ebay for $250 ... maybe referring to the 5 watt version?
