Do people actually do that? I've always used the FX loop for reverbs and delays, never in front of the amp. That just makes it sound like mush at high volume/overdrive settings.

Yes, I should have said "with" instead of "in front of". I humbly beg forgiveness for my sloppy syntax.

...Though come to think of it, I put verb and delay in front of my loopless practice amps without problem. And I remember seeing Gary Moore do the same at a clinic, so I have company. He used the DigiTech Hardwire reverb pedal, so that's another vote for that one.

With practice amps, I presume most of us seldom crank the gain enough for it to be a problem.

Sometimes, I put a reverb pedal in front of a fuzz, for a very unique sound, as the reverb tends to break the locking and bring out the Germaniums with their Geiger counters. But that's not everyday use.

Again, congrats on the amp. Be fascinating to contact Gino Matteo at his website and see if he can tell you more about the maker. Sounds like he knows the guy personally. If nothing else, it would be nice for Gary Heidkamp to hear there's folks out there excited by his work.

Also, it will be interesting to see how you get on putting a reverb pedal in front of it. Enjoy!

Cheers - C

I'd love to get in touch with Gary somehow. It would be interesting to know if this amp is a direct clone of something or designed after something he mused off of and tweaked to make his own.

I did manage to hook up a rack mount reverb through the effects loop last night, and the amp sounded absolutely beautiful. It's evident that I need a good reverb unit for it. The effects loop is very transparent. The amp does take on the effects loop tone as a whole. Any high gain it had dropped a good 30%. But what it did turn into was a very distinguished SRV tone. You know, those "not quite distorted/ not quite clean" sounds SRV sported. It was much like that with a reverb hooked into the loop.

After work, I'll get more into it tonight. But so far I am blown away by this amp. If all goes well this week, it might be time to part with some PCB tube socket mounted stuff.

As I'm still experimenting with this amplifier, new discoveries are being made. It takes some time to get to know the quirks of an amp, especially when there is literally no manual or any info on it anywhere. So it forces me to use my ears. Which is a good thing. I'm all for it.

After hooking up a reverb to it and really bringing this amp to life, I decided to bring out the Tele to see what the amp does with single coils.

What came out of this amp was mind blowing.

I've seen the endorsed musician for this amp on youtube, and all I ever see him play is a semi-hollowbody guitar. I even tried my own sporting Gibson Classic pickups. It makes me wonder if Gino Matteo ever tried any other guitar through a Heidkamp.

To hear a Telecaster through this amp would make you green with envy. Sounds a little presumptuous and arrogant and maybe kind of a mean thing to say. But you would. It's tonal insanity.

I've tried out my humbucker equipped guitars. I tried out my strats. But this amp will make you want to buy 50 Telecasters. It's a Tele player's wet dream.

I'm going to skip over the clean channel for this evaluation for the time being. It's great by the way. But I want to tell you what it does in the overdrive channel.

In the overdrive channel, a Telecaster has a piano-like acoustic sound coupled with a smooth or nasty overdrive. I can't say distortion, because there's not a whole lot to be found in this amp. It's a singing overdrive. It's not like a Marshall. Certainly not like a Mesa. It's something I can't quite put my finger on for a comparison. It's a very vocal overdriven sound. It can be mean and nasty, brutal and punishing. But a Telecaster gives it a 3d acoustic/overdrive that is insanely beautiful and addicting. None of my other guitars showed this kind of flavor.

This amp shines with single coils. That's where it's strengths are really shown. With my strats, the neck pickups were a bit too strong for this amp. But a vintage powered Tele neck pickup sounds crystal clear. The bridge pickup cuts through sharp. The middle position has a silky quality that undeniably smooth.

What the Hell is this thing??? I'm sure the guys at Fender would probably laugh at me for digging this amp as much as I do. They could probably look at the pic of the inside and know exactly what it is or cloned after. But if it's any consolation, I'm at least recognizing that single coil guitars are what shine through it. And now I'm on a quest to find just the right Tele to bring it all full circle.

If Gary Heidkamp ever happens to read this thread. This is a Tele amp brother. 100%.

Don't sweat it Ceri...Fender built a little reverb unit and there was no Loop to put it in so it was used in front of the amp...just saying.

You have lots of talent, but if you do get in contact with him...you will be world famous since he has passed on! Sounds like you hav found a great amp and having a blast getting to know it.

That's sad news man. I honestly didn't know that. I hope I can do this amp justice then.I'll give it my best shot I guess.

Haha. Awesome!
I've been getting completely drunk on Heidkamp for the past couple days. Taste nice!!

Sometimes I'm a little late to the party though. A simple google image search does reveal that Arth1 was correct. This amp is totally a Dumble clone.

Hey T2: sounds like you've got some inside knowledge. Care to share? We've combed the net without finding much out, and eager minds here are curious to know more.

Sure is a nice looking amp. Big shame if the builder is no longer with us.

Cheers man - C

I went down to the pawnshop today to buy that amp and saw it was gone. I've been looking at at for months and guess I waited too long because I already own a tower of amps. It's a Dumble Clone and the guy made them about 8 years ago thinking he was going to start making amps then must have quit. No idea how many he made but it's a cool amp. I should have just bought it when they marked it down but just kept waiting because it was sitting there forever. I tend to always hesitate on stuff then by the time I decide it is too late. The Dumble model in my AXEFX2 is my main SRV tone I put off the amp since I was already pretty happy with that tone on the fractal.

Hey Schlagdog, I don't blame you for being a little hesitant. I was at first myself. I was in there for a good while pondering it.

A- You don't know what it is or why someone pawned it. I had to wonder whether some unknown problem might be inside of it that rears it's head later on. When there's literally no info or reviews to go by, it makes it a hard decision.

B- From what I understand, you basically have 24-hours to get your money back from the purchase. Otherwise, you have to purchase a warranty for 10% of the cost of the item for a six month warranty. And if you bring it back during that time, you get store credit. It's not easy to think about not protecting yourself with the purchase, and it's equally tough to think about having a $750 store credit. That's a lot of money, and what are the chances there will be something worth that much that you really want down the road.

So I understand the hesitation. I just decided to take a chance. I didn't buy the warranty. I took it home and immediately tested it and went over everything as thoroughly as I could. Then I determined that the amp was in good working order. No bugs that I can tell so far. But I'd be lying if I didn't say that I was hesitant at first.

I put it on layaway, and it gave me a while to settle into whether it would be worth buying the warranty or not.

Do you play in a band here in Vegas?
